GMAIL AND BATTERY USAGE

I have used AOL mail since 1995, this week I started using GMail, which I am beginning to like.
I have transferred all my contacts and my account is set up properly.
If I am using Gmail like and instant messaging, sending email getting reply returning the answer and do this lets say 15 to 25 emails I have noticed my battery taking a dive. Now I have done the same thing with my AOL account and never -ever noticed any kind of drain.
Has anybody seen this? Anybody have any ideas?
Now I have made sure everything is turned off and nothing unimportant running.
Thank you in advance.

With using Gmail on your device, it uses more power than AOL uses. This may be the reason for the battery life difference between the two email applications.
