GPS Not Working

Ever since I upgraded my phone to the OTA Gingerbread I have not been able to use my GPS. I have already factory reset the phone twice and made sure all my apps were up-to-date. When I am able to get the GPS to connect it is only for a few minutes and then it is lost. It does not seem to matter whether or not Google and Verizon locations services are checked.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to the community for all your reponses. @jharrison98 You should not have to take the back cover off to use any accessories or use GPS. I've consulted Motorola and this is not a known issue. They believe it may your specific device. Please contact us to replace the device 800-922-0204 option 3 for technical support. You can also PM me and I'll go over the replacement with you. Thank you, Joe L

Have you went into Settings / Locations and Settings and checked Standalone GPS option?

Yes. Checking that box or using the GPS widget both yields the same results...when I can get it to connect it is only for a few minutes and then the location is lost again.

There is a free APP called GPS TEST that is in market. Install it and use it to "test" you GPS signal. You should be accessing like 7-9 satellites and their signal strengths will be revealed via that APP.

I have this app already installed. When the GPS locks on I can see all the satelites. However, when I loose connection even GPS Test comes up blank.

Sounds like you have a hardware bug,  try powering into Safe Mode and try GPS and see if lock is more solid, if so then it is a app probally causing the issue...  It appears that Gingerbread made come changes to Safe Mode.

  • Power Device Off
  • Press and hold Left Hard Menu Button and press power intell you see M.
  • Let go of Power and continue to hold Menu Button
  • Hold until you get a vibration from device and the device boots to Home Page (Will see "Turn on Wireless" in left botton corner instead of "Safe Mode" Now)
  • You will be now in Safe Mode.

If this doesnt work have you tried hard resetting to make sure its not a app or setting causing the issue.

Okay, Safe Mode did not make a difference...but I found this issue and it is quite puzzling. It is the battery cover that is causing the issue (why all of a sudden, I don't know).

IF I have the phone in my holster (shell holster case) the gps seems to work decently. If I take the shell off, GPS goes away (using GPS Test/Status to test this). If I remove the battery cover GPS works.  With the battery case on and in the Motorola Car Dock...it won't work.

I am not sure why the battery cover is causing this. Any suggestions? (Right now I guess if I need to use the GPS, I need to take the battery cover off and put in the car dock...not ideal).

Are you using the extended battery? If so are you using the extended battery cover because I have seen users having ussues from the extra pressure from using the stock door with extended battery, maybe this is the case.

Nope. Using the standard battery with the standard cover. Smiley Happy

Over at another post crb79 was talking about app that may help you, I just tested it on my device and it looks like a new app for my collection..   Check out Z-DeviceTest at https://market.android.com/search?q=Z-Devicetest&so=1&c=apps&rdid=zausan.zdevicetest&rdot=1&pli=1 , this app allows you to run a test of your hardware to determine any malfunctions in device, it is a simple app but can be very helpful, give it a shot..

Wildman could that be possibly be a magnetic interfearence kind thing that could be causing this issue just a thought.

Its possible but most new technology are isolated to avoid interference from thing like that but anything is possible but I do not think so in this case.

Well the reason i asked is because when i would pute Birtha in her Holster u know the one that Verizon maid an has a leather feel. she to me kind of acted weired when i would use my Blue tooth an when i'd take her out of it. she'd be fine an in those leather holsters they have a magnet thats built in the Flap. just like the Magnet thats in the Docking station i've got her in Now . so thats why when he said what his was doing i thought maybe there might be a magnetic field close enough that its messing with  the  internals on his X .

I see where you are going with that but the only issue with that is that the issue is reversed for OP, they reported it works better in case than out, if magnet interfered with the GPS, it would be when its in the case not out.  But it is something to consider.

Well so far Bear it's working pretty Good i got one of those HD Stations for it an I was in Ah again of what this phone an that station can make it capable of doing. Bear i took my Receivers from both of Microsoft Keyboard an Kensington mouse the one's i use on big P.C. an used them both on my Maxx an they both worked great. I posted on here with Pictures what the HD Station looks like they have two models for the Maxx an regular Razr but the one i got you can Hook it up to a Monitor or HD Tv an see the Web on them an do other things as well. Again it's Amazing what that station is capable of doing the thing i am not too happy with it is.  It Does not have a Mini UHF female Receiver to plug in additional Adapters in it. It's a round center Pin Style an without it plugged in all the time Beart the Maxx won't change the Display i guess that's the way Moto wanted this to work. This is one of differences from the station that Droid X set's into. I'm not sure on the other Station that is maid for the Razr's. But they both have a Line output jack that you can attach to a power Sub or other Device to do some Jamming! if one's so desire to do So.   B33

Well the 3G is doing good although i am a little puzzled at why the phones are picking up a tower that is 3miles away an is not a Verizon Tower it's a Sprint Tower. An both of my Droids are giving off a G.P.S location other from were i am actually at. To go more indepth i would rather send a D.M. to ya as to post on Here.

I had an issue where my X was searching for hours......... come to figure out it was my EZPass(above the car dock) was interfering with it.
