GPS Not Working

Ever since I upgraded my phone to the OTA Gingerbread I have not been able to use my GPS. I have already factory reset the phone twice and made sure all my apps were up-to-date. When I am able to get the GPS to connect it is only for a few minutes and then it is lost. It does not seem to matter whether or not Google and Verizon locations services are checked.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to the community for all your reponses. @jharrison98 You should not have to take the back cover off to use any accessories or use GPS. I've consulted Motorola and this is not a known issue. They believe it may your specific device. Please contact us to replace the device 800-922-0204 option 3 for technical support. You can also PM me and I'll go over the replacement with you. Have you went into Settings / Locations and Settings and checked Standalone GPS option?

Yes. Checking that box or using the GPS widget both yields the same results...when I can get it to connect it is only for a few minutes and then the location is lost again.

There is a free APP called GPS TEST that is in market. Install it and use it to "test" you GPS signal. You should be accessing like 7-9 satellites and their signal strengths will be revealed via that APP.

I have this app already installed. When the GPS locks on I can see all the satelites. However, when I loose connection even GPS Test comes up blank.

With battery door on, I detect no satellites and I have a "poor" wifi signal. Take the cover off...BLAM... 9 satellites immediately detected and wifi signal jumps to "good". What is going on here? Obviously it has something to do with the cover. How do I adjust the copper pin and what does it do? Anyone from Verizon care to trouble shoot this?

My GPS on my DROIDX (Motorola) hasn't been working for several days now. It's been driving me crazy. I've download the GPS test apps and did the safe mode thing...nothing worked. I read the previous post and took the battery cover off...GPS works without the battery cover on. What the hell? Can Verizon please explain this? Do I need a new battery cover? I guess if I need to use GPS I have to take the battery cover off.

Update to my previous post.

I put the battery cover on from my Power Mat charger to see if GPS works with that on it....and it works.

GPS does not work with the original battery cover, but works with Power Mat cover on it. HUH?

I'm scratching my head on this.

How can the type of battery cover affect GPS coverage?

are you using the upgraded battery? tighter fit with the cover makes better contact.

I have been looking for weeks for an answer for the same issues.
The copper pin has ground a scratch in the battery cover door. The scratch causes a short circuit and kills
the GPS radio. My dirty fix was to tape a piece of paper over the scratched
spot on the cover door and the problem was solved. No one on the Internet in
any forum knows this, so I hope that they see this post. I will add this advice
everywhere I can because I love my Droid and did not want to replace it.

I am having the same issue with my GPS not getting a fix. I can't even use VZW Navigator because it is almost useless without a GPS fix. I have rebooted, pulled the battery ad nauseum...I can't even geocache with my phone anymore because it doesn't even get a fix on my location! Frustrating!

Droid Dog's "fix" is the correct "Correct Answer" Not the one chosen by Verizon. Thanks Droiddog!!!! I've been cursing this Droid x for 7-8 months before I found this. Now if I can only get it to work another month until I can get an iPhone.

I know this is a little dated, but wanted to share my two cents. My GPS just randomly quit working and WiFi got strangely weak. I too noticed an improvement if I didn't have the back cover on at all, but that seemed a little too strange to be the permanent solution. As it turns out the back cover acts as part of the antenna, but only works well if the rest of the phone's internal antenna is contacting properly. I experienced a boost in WiFi signal and locked on to one GPS sat if I pressed the area just below the battery pull tab and above the microSD slot. After tearing the phone apart and reseating everything, it turned out to be the primary screws on the top and bottom of the phone hidden underneath the plastic weren't tight enough. After tightening them with the phone on I saw a gigantic boost in WiFi signal and GPS started working like a charm.

So, if you think that you're SOL on your GPS or WiFi, just tighten the four screws and it should start working again.

My GPS started to work off and on the past 2 months. As well as my wifi being a little underpowered although I didn't notice it because I was moving my wireless routers to different spots in my house about the same time it happened.

After seeing the suggestion above about making sure everything is tight I downloaded GPS Test and let it sit for 10+minutes with no satellites in sight. I then pressed down on each corner of my phone and the sky map lit up with 10 satellites at mid-range power!!!

So I tightened down the 4 above screws and the two others under the batter cover and I still didn't get a single satellite. I then noticed that one of the front screws, at the top left near the volume buttons, would tighten and then release. I got a pry tool and noticed that the screw boss underneath was cracked and falling to pieces.

So I clamped the phone down and put glue on the screw and pressed it into the shattered screw boss. I also glued the seam near the volume buttons.

I now have 100% consistent GPS and am picking up Wifi signals that I didn't even know existed!
