Any recommended apps for GPS and saving multiple waypoints,  lat   long  similar to the Garmin handheld units.?

Have you checked out Oruxmaps? I use it in parallel with my Garmin Legend with my Droidx. So far my droidx has outperformed by Legend in 4 high peak trips in the Adirondacks. The Legend actually lost track while the droidx was solid (The droidx was in airplane mode and no service available).

FYI, you will have to come out of airplane mode just to kick the droidx GPS functionality. Don't know why since there is no service where I was, but that it is all it takes. Oruxmaps allows you to select maps to use and download to your phone for offline use.

All the radios are turned off. However you can turn the wifi radio back on and apparently the GPS one too. The cellular and bluetooth radios are disabled. Check settings > wireless & networks > there is an airplane mode there.
