the GPS was working perfectly for 3 months, used to take a few seconds to get the location. 2 days ago i noticed that it couldn't get location in an open field. no buildings, no mountains. While driving, it didn't work at all for at least an hour, neither google maps nor verizon navigation app. Verizon app actually displayed a message that unable to get gps location.
Then it suddently started working. Today it took good 15 minutes to get location.
Anybody had similar issues? any suggestions how to fix it?

You could try this: http://phandroid.com/2011/08/22/verizon-users-in-new-york-having-weird-gps-issues-weve-got-a-tempora...
Doesn't exactly fit your scenario but, who knows?

I can't imagine not being able to use my navigation service (I get lost everywhere I go)!
I am glad that it eventually started working for you again.
I'm not sure if you can recall, but at the time, did you happen to have any data connection? Did you have the 3G and were you able to access any websites?
Were you able to go to Settings>Location Settings>Enable either the VZW location services, Standalone GPS services, or Google location services
Now because you were traveling, chances are you were driving through an area where there is no Verizon coverage so therefore the phone had no cell towers to get to in order to find your location.
I know this may not answer why you weren't able to access GPS services a few days ago, however these are the most common scenarios that you may keep in mind should this situation occur again.
