Gallery closes as soon as it opens.

When i open the gallery it immediately closes. if there is any kind of error message it doesn't display long enough for me to see.

I tried resetting the app by clearing its data. No change.

I was going to try to uninstall it and reinstall it but I don't see where it can be downloaded from again to do so.

Any ideas anyone?

I had the same problem and it was frustrating!  After update would not start but I could view pictures in the Files app.  Tried Gallery 3D in Marketplace until a fix but it was too slow so I did some poking around since I did not want to have to reset phone or format card.  What worked for me was going to:

Settings >> Applications >> Manage Applications >> All tab

For each of the following, I clicked on Clear data and Clear cache:

Gallery

Media Container Service

Media Storage

Then I restarted phone by holding down power button, clicking Power Off, then held it again to turn on and working great!  It did take a few minutes for the Gallery to get all the thumbnails again the first time I started it, but works!

That is a preinstalled app so it can not be uninstalled, this issue was present on 2.1 and 2.2 but the issue hasnt been a common for 2.2.1 and the only solution on previous build is a hard reset.  Which version are you running now?

Did you follow my suggestion to hard reset before doing update?  If you didnt I suggest you concider doing this because settings are retained from previous version that can cause issues and I think this is your situation.

The 2.21 (2.3.340) was released a few days back and not everyone had completed the update installation yet, are you sure your on 2.2.1?   Goto Settings > About Phone > System Updates

As for the hard rest question I was wondering if you reset your device to factory before updating to 2.2.1, I suggest it because the update was tested on a clean install and I believe most issues are generated because the process that the opdate does saves settings files from previous installation tha t think causes all the issues,  Heres reset process.

Yes I am on 2.2.1

I have not done a factory rest of the phone. I am very leary of doing so in that I I already have tons of info on the phone, messages and apps and such and not sure how to back all of it up even.

Is there a good guide on where files are stored and whats kept and not during a system wipe?

All contacts get backed up to Google but I use MyBackup from the market to backup everything, I only restore MMS, SMS, Bookmarks, Call Log and Apps...

That is a possible working solution, this may be a good thing to try first but if this doesn't help then consider the hard reset,,, I choose not to suggest resetting under some situation but after working in the computer field I learn that the a number of updates causes issues due to incompatibility. A wipe minimize the possibilities of issues.

This worked.

Much appreciated!

For the record the only thing that was clearable that I had not done before was the Media Storage. Once I cleared it and rebooted it came up working fine. For the record I have 214 photos plus a few videos on the phone and it took the phone a good 5 minutes or so to rebuild it's index or whatever it was doing the first time i restarted it.

My thanks :smileyhappy:

Worked for me. Gallery would open and instantly close. Cleared data on Media Storage was the only value left that I could delete. The rest were grayed out because there nothing im Gallery or Media Services. Cleared the data. Closed it, and just for good measure, rested the phone. Problem instantly solved!
