I had such a hard time choosing between the Droid X and the Fascinate. But I need the 2.2 for my Sony Reader. Plus, I like the hard lines, look, size of the Droid X. I didn't sign up for the Navigate system. On my Omnia, I could pay $2.99 to use the Navigtor occasionally. Can you do that with the Droid? I don't need a Navigator often. Hated to pay $10.00/mo.
Does anyone have any suggestions on anything I should do special when first getting it? What is the 'end it' program I have heard of? Is it helpful?
Thanks! I hope I didn't aggravate anyone. I'm just so excited!

Hey Mc...
Welcome to the Droid X! I think you'll enjoy it.
You don't have to pay for the GPS navigation, and it works great! I don't travel much, but last month I used it to go to a party at a coworker's house on the other side of town. Worked just like a dedicated GPS, and even gave me a picture of her house as soon as I pulled up in front of it.
The 'end it' program?? Do you mean "Task Killer"? If so, I'll let others answer this, but there are equal 'likes' and 'dislikes' for this. (The tech guy at Verizon put "Advanced Task Killer" on mine.)
Let the phone charge fully before you try to do anything with it (I know that's hard to do). Keep reading this forum (there are some great people on here), and explore all this phone has to offer!

Dont download Task Killer, or Advanced Task Killer...etc Its not needed. This app will actually mess things up and make things run funny. They aren't neccessary and will only add agrevation to your phone experience!
Android is different to most other phone operating systems. It's closer to Linux than any other type of operating system. Lots of services and applications constantly run in the background just like they do on Windows. However, and this is important, they do not have to use up a ton of resources. A service or app can be loaded, yet use almost no additional memory, and 0% CPU until it actually has to do something.
In general, killing off stuff is a waste of time. Android automatically asks apps to close that aren't needed when it needs more memory. Killing off some of the processes you are killing off also means it'll slow your phone down, as these processes only need to reload, and when you do need to use them it means the phone will be slower for the few seconds it takes to reload them.

I haven't used VZ Navigator on my Eris, but I would assume that it's not much different from the one available on most of Verizon's 3G phones, which worked fine on my Chocolate, the few times I used it, however, it is not something I would ever pay for, especially a monthly free when there is a good, free alternative.

Just make sure, MCAPPLE, you are using the Google Naviation and not VZ Navigator. Google Nav is free. VZ Nav is what costs the extra $10/month

Ann154 and others,
I also am expecting a new Droid X, mine comes on Wednesday. I have seen the Google Navigator and google earth on the demos and tutorials and wondered what the difference is between that and using the "pay per month" VZ Navigator? Can you explain?
Thanks, Debra

Well, I guess I don't really know what the difference is, other than the fact that Google Maps (not "Google Navigator") is free and VZ Navigator is not. I've not used VZ Navigator.
I've been all over the place with the X and Google Maps. I cannot see a reason to pay for Navigator. At all.
Enyoy those new Droids (almost a haiku!)

Oh yeah, Newbies...
Right off the bat, if you plan to do much texting at all, go to the App Market and get the Handcent Messaging app.
Oh, man, I could do this all night, but you need to explore for yourselves....
We will be here...

I am sorry I can't explain the differences between Google Nav and VZ Nav other than the price. VZ Nav isn't available on my phone. (And sooo glad it is available. an extra $10/month, yuck)

Thanks for the replies about Google maps vs VZ Navigator. I will plan to use Google maps with my new Droid X.
MCAPPLE-please let us know when you get your new Droid X today and how long you have to charge it up and how the activation goes on it and the "updates" if you do them. My Droid X is due in shipment to me tomorrow,I'm really interested in the updates and not quite sure whether I should do those, I"ve read about battery power issues as a result of an update.
thank you, Debra
