My contract ends the 16th of next month. My friend has a droid X and he is going to give it to me for free. i wanted to activate it on my plan once it was out of contract. i currently have the $10-75MB data feature.
When I activate the Droid X is it going to make me have the $30 unlimited plan? I don't need the unlimited plan, I have wifi 90% of the places I go and I am not addicted to my phone so I don't need it to constantly update.
Can anyone answer this for me? Thanks

It will not matter if you bought from store or from a friend you will have to have a data plan on the device in regulations of TOS, but I believe they offer a tier based plan now that will allow you to get a lite data plan for your device... Honestly I could not deal with my device without a unlimited data plan because a number of features use data regularly.

But remember, unfortunately, it looks like the unlimited data plan is going the way of the dodo bird. Love to see how they are going to tier this.

Was the Droid X bought on Contract? If so Verizon might not allow you to add it to an expired contract without carrying the contract term over to your account. The reason is this could be used fradulently to avoid an ESN ban on a non-paying account. It would be best to discuss all of this with a VZW employee in your local Corporate store.

I am concidering this because they have not officially made the change to plans and this is still the most update plans being offered at this time, Verizon will still offer it until the new plans are officially added to the site and contracts.
Unless they have pulled this document and all information related they still might offer..

If you check vzw.com the requirements for an Android phone is:
Data pack required
Early Termination Fee $350 (1yr and 2yr contracts)
Note the "Data pack required"....You are able to keep the grandfathered $15 for 150MB data plan instead of needing the Unlimited Plan. The only time you need the "Unlimited Plan" is if you are adding a new line of service that does not have a grandfathered data plan for the $15. No you cannot have the $10 plan sorry. I am in a similar position as you but keep this in mind: You say you use wifi and are not a very active data user - well, once you get a droid, trust me, you will find many things that you will want that data for and some of those things may not work on wifi and some will update(weather, etc) when your are not on wifi. Are you a video game finatic? You will love the emulators and if you have a wii remote you can sync it to your phone and use it to play your games....neat....I applaud the creator(s) of this app. If you only knew what the Droid has you might think twice. If it is the cost of the plan I understand what you mean.
Yes VZW is going to a tiered data plan structure and will be ending the unlimited data sometime but who knows when. Other carriers have done this already. So with that said eventually you can get a lower data plan cost but if I were you I would get the unlimited plan so when the plan goes away you can keep it(grandfathered) and then if a tier price works then switch.
Your decision but just wanted to clarify....

The user has a LG enV Touch that I do not think it is classifed as a smartphone so the data plan they have now most likely still change because they will have to switch to a Smartphone plan and this will be listed as a rate change which could make them require the more expensive plan.
Also if OP has the New Two Year plan this will remove them from this plan because the rate change, just something to think about..

smartphone/more expensive plan:
apples & oranges like you said, different data plan for voyager/env touch and droid x.
i had a voyager for years with a $15 data plan and i had the choice of the $15/150 or $30/unlim last dec 24 when i made the switch to the droid x.
at that time, adding the smartphone to a shared plan knocked off $10 off the shared plan, so the bump up to $30/unlimited was a net $5 increase.

Probably. Since they are coming out with the Droid X2, plus all the new phones, such as the HTC Thunderbolt, they may allow you the lesser rate data plan. However, every time you download or upgrade an apps, you are using data. Check weather, data. Surf the net, data. So be careful.

I think I am just going to switch to Page Plus Cellular after my contract ends. I can get unlimited text $19.99 a month and then 400 minutes for $25 that last for 3 months. I only use about 100 mins or less a month, I mainly text.
So I'm just going to get the Droid X and get the same Verizon coverage on Page Plus Cellular and not have to have any data plan and no contracts and only pay $28 a month on average. So I would save $42 in my current situation and $62 a month if I had to have the unlimited data plan. Its going to save me a lot.
Thanks for all the quick replies!

Like I said it it ran off Verizons towers. Friends of mine have already switched. That's how I found out about it. They use Verizons towers so obviously everywhere I have signal now I am going to have with them.
My friends have service everywhere I do now, so it is the same.

Have you determined if the Droid X your friend is giving you has a clean ESN? If the ESN is not clean VZW will not allow Page Plus to activate it for use over their network.
Also keep in mind that a carrier will always prioritize tower connections to their own subscribers. Those who are utilizing the VZW network such as PP can be bumped and connected to a tower further away, meaning a weaker signal.

Well he decided to keep his droid x so I got a great deal on eBay for a brand new one. So the ESN is clean.
I live in a rural area so getting bumped is an unlikely situation. Also as I said before my friends have it and have not had a single problem with is except that their wallet is bigger from paying 3x less than what they were. lol
I have also discussed it on a page plus forum with people that have the droid x and were on Verizon before and they have had 0 problems.
