Thanks everyone for the responses. I just wanted to add some additional information. SMTP providers may require Authenticated SMTP or ASMTP. ASMTP uses some form of authentication (username / password, IP address, etc.) to verify that a sender is authorized to send messages using that particular server. If the provider uses an IP address or IP range for authentication, the user must establish a dial-up connection to the ISP / SMTP provider. This will ensure that they are assigned a valid IP address for authentication. Otherwise, attempts to send will fail.

If the provider uses a username / password combination to authenticate senders, the combination must be valid for both the incoming and outgoing servers. Some email clients do not support ASMTP that is independent of the incoming username / password. In these cases, the user may not be able to retrieve email from one provider and send using another.
Below I have provided the settings for your Mail.com account:
Incoming Server
pop1.mail.com
port: 110
Outgoing Server
smtp1.mail.com
Furthermore, your Wi-Fi will turn off if your screen saver becomes active .
To keep Wi-Fi from turning off when the screensaver becomes active:

Menu > Settings > Wireless & networks > Wi-Fi settings > Menu > Advanced > Wi-Fi sleep policy, select Never.
Thank you, LatachaM_VZW

The starting advice would be to do a battery pull and/or removing your email account and reentering it.

Is it a specific email message or anything you try to send? Are you still able to use your email on a computer? (could be a server issue)

Could it be the settings, port, etc?  Do you think contacting your email service provider might help?

Sounds like you ISP probally updated its security settings on its server, try removing the problem account and set it back up and see if it corrects the issues, some servers requires being reauthorized after a ISp system update. If that doesnt resolve issue contact ISP and verify setting with them to see if they changed the outgoing access port.

Had to jump into this thread to see if anyone can relate to my outgoing mail problem. I get the same error when trying to send mail out through my SMTP server from my mail.com account.

Brief story.. I received a Driod X "like new" replacement phone about a month ago. I set up my mail.com account and my hotmail account. Everything in both email accounts worked perfectly. I did not have a gmail account.

Well the "like new" Driod X had a problem. It would just shut off and reboot during a phone call. So I asked for another Droid X and got it 2 weeks ago. This time I did set up a gmail account so I could move my contacts to the phone from Outlook.

I set up the 2nd Driod X email accounts exactly the same way as the first and could not send out going mail through my mail.com SMTP server (hotmail works fine) and got the authentication error message. After changing security  and port settings and playing with the thing for hours I gave up and put the Goggle outgoing mail setting in and it worked.

The problem with that is the outgoing mail has the gmail address and not the mail.com address of my business.

How could this be? Is Google forcing me to use their mail service? Is there an app that will let me sync with outlook and also route my email through my .com server?

PS the 2nd "like new"  Driod replacement phone needs to be returned. It will not hold a wifi connection.

This is not a Android or Droid X issue, when emails have a authentication error message this is a server configuration issue, I have 5 diffrent accounts configured on my device and they all work without issues because I verify the ISP settings and make sure my device information.

And as for wifi connection, are you using a wireless N router because the wifi card in the Droid X has the new N support and some older routers have issues connecting if wireless N isnt support.. Have you ytied updating the routers firmware?

I keep forgetting about that setting:smileyhappy:, I have it set on my device and set my backup software to restore this option automatically to never so it keeps slipping my mind,  thanks because I needed a reminder about this option... I think the default should have been set on never anyway :smileywink:

I have to believe this is something going on between Verizon and Yahoo.

I have had a this same problem occur with my Android email accounts several times over the past 3 or 4 years.

I have about 12 different Yahoo email accounts set up on my Droid X and they all work fine.. then out of nowhere I start getting Authentication Error on several of the accounts. The email accounts work fine from a laptop but when I try to access them from my phone they've all of the sudden stopped working. Over a period of days or sometimes weeks, it ends up affecting all of my yahoo mail accounts.

So, after trying a bunch of different processes, here is what I found works to correct the problem immediately:

Delete the email account from your phone: Go into Manage Accounts, find the email account that is now working, select it and then select Delete.

Using a laptop or other computer Log onto the Yahoo email that was not working and then go to Account Info: This is currently found by clicking the little Gear icon on the upper right of the screen. You may be asked to enter your password again

On the Yahoo Account screen look down the list and find "Manage Apps and Web Site Connections". Click on this.

On the Apps and Connections screen you should see an entry for "Motoblur", removed this: there should be a remove or delete next to it that you can click on.

Now save your changes and back out of your Yahoo Account Info and log off of your  Yahoo email account

Now, Go back to your phone and Add back your Yahoo email account, just like you did when you added it the first time.

Once you complete this process your email on your phone should work again.

No one has been able to tell me why this happens. Sometimes it's two or three email accounts and sometimes it runs through all of them. Usually after I perform the steps above I'm good for at least 6 months.

Hope this is helpful to somebody.
