The experiment is running now but not looking good.

  • Android OS is still at the top of the battery usage chart
  • The phone is still running warm
  • Battery level is at 89% after only 1 hour 45 minutes on battery - for an EXTENDED battery

The battery usage chart is different in that the big graph at the top doesn't show any blue at all, so I'm guessing this process did force a reset of the stats file.

Also, when I booted following your suggestions, it booted into Safe mode.  I decided to leave it in safe mode figuring that might consume less than regular.

Here's my questions:

  • I understand why calibration issues could lead to an inaccurate battery meter, but why would it actually drive CPU usage and battery consumption?
  • I have both a regular and an extended battery - do I need to go thru this process every time I switch?  Or does the OS notice a different battery and automatiacally reset?

Thanks for the help

Remraz,

Funny about safe mode, I don't see why, but re boot and get it out of safe mode.   Then just keep using it because some folks have found that the battery thing just goes away.

BUMP charge it 3 or 4 times in a row one morning.

On mine the OS was using as much battery as the display for the first 24 hours and then it settled down without me doing anything although I "think" I did bump charge it 2 or 3 times in a row the next morning.

What I am tying to do is get the battery stats up to date because the only sure way is to do this is to use the APP "Battery Calc" but it only works on a rooted phone and I do not want to do that.

89% is not to bad let's wait and see.

I do not know why the OS is using so much battery.  Go to your APP Task Manager and touch it.  Touch RAM at top of display.  Then touch Clear Memory.  This will not hurt anything but it may stop the OS from using so much battery power.

You do not ned to go through this process every time you change batteries.

That's really strange.  I suddenly had a terrible drop in battery life (approx 70% less) with all the same apps etc. and draining the battery didn't seem to do much good.

Android Processes not run 40% to 60% - they never used to.  I've brought it back to factory settings twice and watched or and eliminated suspicious apps.  No difference.

I can see that the phone has no battery life if it's devoting half its energy to keeping the basic OS running - but I can't figure out what constitutes the OS that is running and taking so much battery.

Suggestions appreciated.

Louise - I had the same problem with two Android processes at the top of the list.  After several days, the battery life improved, although not to pre-GB levels.  The Androd processes are now consistenly way down on the usage list.  So something was obviously up with those to drain the battery.  Now that they have settled down battery is a quite a bit better.  I am not a very heavy user, but I get through the day easily now where as for several days after the update, it was not even close.

When my Charge was running Froyo, nothing I did helped the battery.  Within an hour of booting up (my commute time) my phone was usually down to 85%.  I tried everything - including switching to 3G exclusively and turning off background data.  When I got Gingerbread, the battery life didn't get any better.  The other day, I switched on airplane mode as I entered the subway.  When I got off, the battery had only gone down 2%.  I was amazed.  So I started fiddling around with the settings.  Eventually I switched back to 3G, and battery life became outstanding - even with background data going.  I figure that the Gingerbread update did something to correct this, since switching to 3G never helped battery life under Froyo for me.  Today, I unplugged with 3G going and started my commute.  An hour later, my battery was still at 100% (I switched to airplane mode for 30 minutes).

Today I switched back to my original, regular-sized battery.  And for reasons I cannot explain, I got excellent battery life.  Phone not hot.  Android OS back down to the bottom of the list most of the day.  15 hours on battery and it still reports 66%.  Keep in mind I didn't do much with the phone all day (or other days) than check it's battery status.  No special battery bumping or charging done.

This evening at a resturant, the phone got a little warmer and Androd OS was up to 30% from 11%.

I read others say things magically got better, but in this case there's the switch of batteries from extended to regular.  I'll have to keep doing experiments but hoping my regular battery can keep this up.

For you folks having battery problems take a peek at what I did to my own Charge phone regarding re-setting the Battery Statistics.

My first post in this thread describes how I did it.

I wrote this in another post but it sounds like it still would apply here:

I actually had battery life issue when I first got the update as well (and I had an extended battery).  I used to get about 2 days out of the phone and after the update, I barely made it through 1.  I tried juice defender, uninstalling all apps that I didn't "need" (which is relative, I guess).  Anyway, I wrote what solved my problem in this post:

http://community.vzw.com/t5/DROID-Charge-by-Samsung/Droid-Charge-Gingerbread-2-3-update-schedule/td-...

But here's what helped fix it for me (it was a browser issue, from what I found):

"The default browser seemed to be an issue for my phone lagging a lot (and force closing), as well as draining the battery.  Even if you close it, it must be staying on in the background or something to that effect.  I ended up downloading the mini opera browser and changing the internet shortcut to that instead of the default browser and my phone seems to have sped up and my battery life is doing much better!   i've been using my phone as average amount and I'm still sitting at 87% (with the extended battery) where I was sitting at around 60% or so (since the update).
