Gingerbread: A Crap Update

I recently installed the Gingerbread update on my Droid X and now my once beautiful phone is a piece of crap. It lags constantly, the SD card fails to read, some of my apps don't work, the news widget is broken, the camera fails, and the BT radio works when it feels like.

All this update really did was to destroy my phone and change the colours of various menus and options. Is this what you all were clamouring for? Is this the great update everyone was yammering on about that was supposedly oh so great? This update is totally useless as all it does is make your phone obsolete.

This will be my first and last Android device. The only thing this has that the iPhone doesn't is a huge screen, but I'm sure the iPhone will come along with a bigger screen soon enough. Now I will sell this piece of crap and buy a white iPhone.

Agreed. My phone crash/boots when receiving text messages. 6 crashed today alone. "But...but....but you should do a factory reset", that is an absolute ridiculous option for a $600 device. Android fanboys just get their feelings hurt when Apple can release timely updates that don't require a factory reset. 5 months of Droid X 11 factory resets vs. 3 years of iPhone 0.

Wow. I'm glad I didn't even get the update on mine. Now I definitely know not to install it.

These are the "help" options:

1. Factory reset

- then run with no apps

2. Replace SD card

3. Replace Battery

4. Replace phone

5. Repeat

Seriously, there were a huge amount of test group recipents that did NOT encounter any serious issues. Most of the problems are more of a cosmetic issue - or THIRD PARTY APP ISSUE. Yes, there are NEW issues that cropped up. I will say that I fall into the "minimal/no" category - easy install. No major issues at all. Really like the update. Some cool features.

I would suggest that if peeps have any actual problems or CONFUSION or QUESTIONS, submit the problem/issue in a single thread - or search the forum to see if it was already addressed. Software is what softwatre does. Yes, there are bugs in any release; even iPhone.

(and I do NOT work for Verizon or Moto - so please don't suggest that. Just a happy Droid X customer.)

Go back to your Iphone forum please.

If you do actually own a Droid X,(highly unlikely) the problems are YOU, not the phone.

That is a false statement anyway, the iphone does format the device when it does its update and then sync all apps and data back to device after updates completes... So the false concept that iPhone doesnt need to be formatted for a update is so false... :smileywink: :smileyvery-happy:

Wildman, these Iphone lovers are saying Android is horrid. We must at once throw our perfectly functioning devices into the street and run out and buy an Iphone because they are having problems! And we were called Android fan-boys! Which I find quite offensive as I haven't been a "boy" in many moons.

You can call a grown man many names, but if you want to guarantee a fight, call him a boy....

I suspect these are the same kids who go around bragging that their parent has a Chevy so all Fords are crap....

Mine works perfectly...been using it almost nonstop for the past 8 hours and haven't found one problem using most of the features and apps. I did do a factory reset before and then after the update I cleared the cache and factory reset. The phone is more enjoyable, love the new UI...it's like a new phone. I was getting bored before with stock froyo, tho I had no issues with that either. Just {word filter avoidance} verizon reception where I live and surrounding spots. Yay Gingerbread!

The update totally killed my phone. The phone never fully boots up. It freezes about a minute after first displaying, partially, the home screen. If I then touch anything, it goes blank, except for the Notification Bar, which is just frozen. I've done numerous battery pulls, to no avail. I can't even do a reset. (Note: I had never modified or rooted my phone. And, I wasn't running any obscure programs.)

I went to my local Verizon store last Sunday, and they couldn't fix or reset the phone, either. A refurbished phone is supposed on its way, but I haven't received it yet.

This is the last time I'll ever be part of a trial group.

frankly sir i do not believe you completely if the update killed your phone for the test group why wait all weekend to go i also had issues with my phone not gb and recieved everything tuesday to replace it.....why are we seeing so many newbies in here come every update? i call **bleep** im tired of seeing posters with 1 or 2 posts saying how long they have had the phones where have you been the forums havent moved why show up to cry ? im sick of it you pop up drop a few negative posts and dissapear....we try to help each other here and work things out what does total negativity do???? sometimes software and devices fail just because the playstation network got hacked i didnt go on and on about the piece of junk no i know ive owned something great for a while and a bump in the road is all it was if this update killed your phones or ruined something get it replaced its easy to do and not hard to put the apps back on your phone.

Oh I updated 3 X phones without a problem love it so far.I've also had IPhones that I never had problems with.Crap happens there is 360 million people in the USA. •¿•

dont come here cry about something boast another device and dissapear it pointless if everything was perfect we wouldnt have the need for updates in the first place

for you rooted users stop crying you knew the deal before the update if its not installing stop playing dumb unrooted are unreliable.

and like you said crap happen so why say its a junk phone or bad update when there were only a few misshaps because from what i have seen is about 10 complaints out of what 10's of millions of verizon customers? so no it wasnt the update just a flaw somewhere once you try the update in working order then criticize it.

My update went great. Only issue I had was it set my data to WIFI instead of mobile, and changed my email sync, not hard to figure out. Mine seems to use battery faster even though its still in Night time mode but I'm sure its just a setting I need to change. That's part of the fun of updates is rediscovering your phone. Like a new toy!

My update went wonderfully also. No glitches what-so-ever. (of course I cheated.... I had my fingers crossed the whole time)

Root has nothing to do with it, don't know why that was even mentioned. Even a rooted device can get the update provided none of the preinstalled software is missing, but it will remove root.

Just because someone doesn't have many posts doesn't make them a troll, it could be a simple matter of them never having a reason to post until now.

You are missing the point. They are referring to those who claim they have been having issues for months or been thru many phones yet they only have 1 or 2 posts and never attempt to get help yet mock our attempts to help others.

There are indeed valid issues which only time and effort will correct.

Yes, there are some issues. There also may have been changes made to the way things work that some people are perceiving as issues when they are not.

For example, the hard button lights not working. The hard button lights (at least under GB) use the light sensor near the ear speaker to determine if they should light or not. If that sensor is dirty or covered by a case the hard button lights will not light. If the DX user is in a room or area that is well lit the hard button lights will not light (by design). In a well lit room wake your DX and unlock it. Then cover the area near the ear speaker. When I do that, my hard key lights come on. When I take my hand away the lights go out.

After I updated to GB I thought the lights might have a software bug. I then came to find out how the lights work now.

Big difference between a SW bug and working as designed.

I agree that a low number of posts does not necessarily mean a poster is a troll. Hell, look at my post count.

Unfortunately, more often than not, people with a low post count who post certain content do get categorized rightly or wrongly into certain types of personalities or people (noobies, trolls, etc).

BTW, if someone wants to get rid of their DX and get another phone I say go ahead if that makes them happy.

I have a feeling that once they get that phone they may think it is crap when they cannot see flash content on a lot of internet sites.

They also may think that the email cleint on that phone is crap when it comes to what they have to do to attach a file to an email.

Beauty and functionality is in the eye of the beholder and some people see things differently. That is what makes this world so fun to live in.

I really haven't had any issues at all. Not used to the new cut & paste yet, but I'm sure I'll pick it up. The only weird thing that happened is after I downloaded gingerbread is that a window came up that said my cache was full, so I deleted it. Otherwise fine.
