  • Android 3.0 Gingerbread will be released in mid- October (around 15 -16th), 2010. First handsets shipping in November/December – for the Holiday Season.
  • Minimum hardware requirements for Android 3.0 devices are: 1GHZ CPU, 512MB or RAM, displays from 3.5” and higher.  (We all, of course, heard that Android handsets with 2GHz CPU’s are coming)
  • New 1280×760 resolution available for the devices with displays of 4” and higher. (Anyone thinking about Android tablets now? )
  • Completely revamped user interface. If you want to get a feeling of what Android 3.0 Gingerbread UX is like, check out the Gallery app on Nexus One. The same overall feel, light animated transitions,etc. Natively, through all the UI.
  • Android’s split into 2 branches becomes official. 3.0 for top of the line/high end devices. Cheap, low-end mass market handsets will keep Android 2.1/2.2

it is the next version of the android operating system...but doesn't appear to be coming any time soon. your phone's operating system is updated from time to time with added features...much like windows 95 to 98 to now...vista, then windows 7.

 @nimiaj,

Just as before, the GO contact sync software did NOT work. I tried all sorts of things, no dice.

I have submitted a separate request for help in the boards. Hopefully I'll get some help.

Thanx again.

I'm not sure if the notification I just received is for Gingerbread or another update, but I got the notice that there is "an important update" available for my phone, with the continue to update or cancel.  It stated that the phone would reboot and install the update.  I counted down from 10 seconds and then I waited for something to happen.  NOTHING had happened - no reboot, no download of any sort, nothing to indicate I had chosen to update.  This is the second time in a couple of weeks this has happened.

What's the deal?  Why do I get requests to update and then nothing happens?   It's pretty sad that I've had this phone since April 2010 and have never gotten beyond 2.2 Froyo.  My upgrade is due at the end of this month so I will likely be getting the Razr or Galaxy Nexus.  In the end it has been disappointing that Verizon and HTC have not supported this phone properly and have pretty much ignored all the issues and delays in rolling out the updates.

Yeah, that update is for Gingerbread, or "OS ver 2.3.4". It's the next step on the HTC Incredible from Froyo, "OS ver 2.2". I had NO idea they were even going to ATTEMPT to upgrade that phone, I figured "we've sold it, there are new models, why bother?" But I had NO problems getting mine to load the new OS. Overall, the new OS is running fine for me, BUT I STILL have not resolved the HTC Sync problem (it no longer working properly). I have found a temp workaround, but it's a royal pain. I update my Outlook thruout the day, then at a given moment, look up the changed records (using Outlook's "modified" date) and manually load those into a CSV, upload the CSV to my Google Contacts, then have the phone sync its contacts with Google. Takes about 15 minutes a day. This is until I hear back from either Verizon or HTC about this. (And I'm not holding my breath.) My trek to get there has been interesting, including a rep telling me I have to "turn off my V-cast" before HTC Sync will ever work again! That involves calling a secret phone number (unless you hack phones all the time!), enter a password, and turn off the CDROM on the phone. It's been a crazy journey!

Actually, the gingerbread update knocked out my droid incredible. It updated while I was studying, and when I took a look at it again, it'd rebooted and asked me for my google info. I thought it did a wipe, but that's the bad part. It didn't, I have some of my old apps. But it now says "Application data is low" which it wasn't before, and HTC sense force closes every second. So.. I can't exactly get to settings to check on it. And I totally called verizon telling them this happened. They told me to factory reset, which.. didn't work.

So.. I dunno what to do right now. But when I went to the verizon store, they told me they couldn't help me because its out of warranty, and "Oh, btw, it'll be an extra $20 for an early upgrade."

But my phone was really well taken care of, I've never dropped it or gotten it wet, and it was okay before this update.   Out of warranty or no, this is not okay.

Disregard my last.. I just updated it and all went well.. Was kind of dissappointed though when I read the update notes. It says it updated the radio so I thought it was going to address the horrible reception issue known with the incredible2 and the orig incredible.

All it did apparently was to go from 4 bars to 5 bars on the signal strength indicator so now we can see with a bit more granularity just how out of sync that bar indicator is compared to the actual signal strength (-dbm)..

oh well..
