There are unofficial updates to Gingerbread,
{edit for TOS violation}
. When can we expect an official update?

Well that simply implies that it can compromised fairly easily, which I gaurantee more then likely what ever I post I usually speak Hypothetically or sarcastically rarely with any mater of fact step by step directions, Obviously compromising Bootloader is against TOS, but breaking TOS with-in a forum environment can be objective. I know I for one am just using it to pass time waiting for the update, might as well shoot the ------ in the mean time.

If your post gets edited you usuallly can drop the admin that edited a PM and ask and they usually explain it to you...
Now about the OP post, from the layout of the message I would guess that the post had a link to probally one of the forums that has the leake Gingerbread rom and that is not allowed. Any links or information on how to load, download or hack a device is not allowed on a number of sited but there is sites that allow this and this can be a risky situation so the Admins usually stops post that is going this direction..
Hope that helped clearify things a bit for you...
, but I do not like being behind when there is a stable upgrade. Thanks.
lol.

Did you really think you was goinf to get away with that one? , there is no bigger NO! NO! to do here...
First off my edited comment was about gaining access to the file structure of the phone itself...I will self edit here, though some sensitive someone may still take offense to something that is quite prevalent anyway.
Second, I wasn't whining, I was asking for legitimate assistance and information so that I could have a current version without violating anything. If that is the kind of assistance that I get from this community, then you can keep it. This is not the community that I thought it was. I would rather converse with those who are a little more open and a lot less touchy...I could give a crap lees what you want or don't want. I was looking for official info...I will check in to the unofficial means as a result of the welcome that I get from this so called "community"

The information you posted brakes one of the biggest rules of your contract, in order to install the information given you have to due something that will
1. Void your devices warrenty and
2. Breach TOS because you would be installing software not released for public use which can merit your contract and service to be cancelled by Verizon.
Now as for information required to do these things are not covered on this site because only certified software can be supported here in this forum. I am sure if you placed parts from a Ford car on a GM, you wouldnt call GM about the part from Ford doesnt work on the car and then expect GM to fix the damage that came from you installing the unauthorized item.... I hope you wouldnt.
I hope this clearify things.
"what is it that you want the update to do?"
That's an easy one. Prevent force closures, random rebooting, be more compatible with apps so they don`t require removal after installation, better battery life, just an overall smoother running phone.
I see that people use cars for analogies all the time. lemme try one. You own a ford and every once in a while it acts up but overall is a good car so you become used to the minor nuisances then the dealer says we have an update that we can install on the cars CPU that will possibly offer better fuel mileage and some other improvements that can possibly enhance the overall ownership experience. Do you say " nah, I`m all set because I`m accustomed to its little quirks" or say " Please do all you can to make it as reliable as possible."? DROID X plus GINGERBREAD = better, more stable, faster.
A phone with great hardware deserve a better OS.
Funny you asked. On some of the reputable Android sites there are reports of people getting the update over the air today (04/12/11). But, I have not seen anything written in stone and those investigating are not getting confirmation from Verizon or Moto. Those reporting on it it are saying those getting the update to Gingerbread are getting it forced over the air with the phone saying the update was downloaded do you want to restart your phone. People checking to see if it can be pushed (which has been the usual) have gotten the Your phone is up to date...). I include myself in trying this. So I can't confirm it. But, it does seem to be the buzz right now on the X. We will have to see.
So many users want the latest installed before it is ready and then usually complain because it has bugs, 2.2.1 has been a rather smooth os in my opinion, its not perfect but if it isnt compatible with an app this isnt the os issue, it more a developer issue. The information you posted was for a leak build that was far from stable so installing it before its been completed will not benifit you.
Now if you choose to take the risk of loading files like these YOU ARE TAKING THAT RISK... You sound like you do not want to except the answers given and once again thats fine but all replies since first post is in responce to why your post was removed.
Now on the record it has been reported that some users have been recieving Gingerbread version 4.5.588 slowly being pushed to some devices, but this cant be verified by me because I havent seen this on my device yet but I am looking forward to having it also.
The newest and hopefully soon to be released update from Motorola has been exceptionally stable for me. I`m not here to pick a fight. I still have the original x I received the day it was released. I have on occasion gone into a Verizon store for help and in my early days of ownership I looked for help here as well. Spent many hours since the beginning trying new things to make my particular phone to not run flawlessly but reliably. I have had to remove the battery so often the cover which holds it secure is so loose I have to keep a body glove on it from falling off. LOL. I am not a fanboy. I just like what this phone is capable of doing. It`s like taking my desktop, Camera, Gps and so on with me everywhere I go. A world of info at my fingertips and it fits in my pocket. For many this has been a reliable device but there are also many like me who have had not such great success. In my opinion the upgrade to gingerbread is welcoming to this droid x owner. When it comes I`ll accept.
Sorry droidsw. I almost forgot to answer your ?. I don`t completely understand how some apps run more stable in gingerbread versus froyo but in my case it does. Some apps I tried to enjoy on froyo had to be removed because they just wouldn't perform properly but every app I have experienced in gingerbread has run perfectly fine.
DroidSw,
"So, unless someone finds me and puts a gun to my head, I won't be updating to gingerbread, period."
That may be happening.
Reports that I have been reading today on the "reported" official update are stating that it is a "silent download". Meaning that it just happens. You will get a notice that it has been downloaded and do you want to restart your phone. You have no choice. Now these are un confirmed reports.
droidsw wrote:galaxie,Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't apps written for an OS, not the other way around?.In other words, how will gingerbread, or any update somehow resolve app conflicts, force closures, etc.?To the contrary, an update can and usually causes more app conflicts than it resolves.Smoother running phone? Some glitch resolution? I'd give you that, but I can't think of any that my phone has and I'm not a Droid X fanboy. Why lie? My phone is a near perfect device.Longer lasting battery through an update? Sounds good, but the extended battery will do that too.The last update in Dec was a colossal fubar for Moto, if you ask me. I went through three phones because of it until I figured out the problem. So, unless someone finds me and puts a gun to my head, I won't be updating to gingerbread, period.artificialreef, I didn't mean you were whining, specifically. Those in the "I want the update NOW crowd", do whine and moan over and over (except galaxie500fb who makes some salient points). The fact that your posts were edited for content implied that you were up to something (either vulgarity or mentioning rooting) and that is no way to start a conservation in any forum. If you post within TOS rules and want to have civilized interactions, you can find that here.
I agree that the apps are designed to the OS and not the other way and the update will most likely cause more issues until developers update there apps with the supported codes, now i do now a number of users have been updating there apps to be GB ready but I havent seen enough to see the transition be smooth for all users.

Ok since you have evidently have the leak build what is you reasoning for voicing any issues with your device, sounds like you made decision and that is your option but if users here are trying to follow the rules and admins are enforcing the TOS, what are you tring to occomplish with this post?
LOL wildman, never said that I`m having any issues with my x. It`s finally running beautifully thank you very much. For the record I`m not trying to accomplish anything except state an opinion. Opinions are a violation of the forums TOS or just yours?
droidsw wrote:And to follow my last comment, this:http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/04/12/happening-now-droid-x-gingerbread-update-brings-a-new-bootloader-kills-root-access/
Interesting but not surprising, but in honesty this wont stop the programmers from tring...
This is my first post on here. I just signed up.. I've had my Droid X since November. Nobody I knew had one before, so I knew nothing about this phone except the little bit of internet research I did, which was basically specs. I love this phone. I feel sorry for the people who have nothing but problems with theirs, and I wonder what the hell they're doing wrong. Sure, it reboots every once in a while. But for the most part, I've had very few problems with my phone, and the problems I've had are very minor compared to the Milestone XT720 that I went through 3 of and the Wildfire I also went through 3 of because both of those phones are JUNK! Anyway, to the update. I can't WAIT for this update! I really with everyone would quit playing with my emotions and giving me false hopes that I will be getting Gingerbread soon. Some people may not want it, but I do! I've never rooted my phone. I've had this stock X with my Otterbox since day 1. After all the reading I've done on rooting, it's not worth all the trouble. You have more problems with crashes and booting up the phone than anything. For what? Themes? So all of that trouble and constant problems for themes?! Ya'll have fun with that lol. I'm just going to try to be patient and wait for this official release. I think this rumor going around is just that. Out of all of these people who claim they have this update from yesterday, I've seen 1 picture, and where it shows what's using the battery, the time says over 2 days, which shows that it's **bleep**. If you had to update, you had to restart the phone, therefore, the battery timer would restart. Anyway, whoever doesn't want the update, that's cool. That's your decision. But some of us do want Gingerbread!
galaxie500fb wrote:The bootloader I would love to see unlocked just so I could have the choice to run an OS completely void of so called phone manufacturers enhancements. Pure android plain and simple.
Then quite simply: You should have purchased a different device. It was WELL known that the Droid X was going to have a locked bootloader long before it was released.
galaxie500fb wrote:Really? Well known? Kindly direct me to a presales release link from Motorola or Verizon stating that the DROID X would be locked down with an encrypted bootloader.
Here's a statement that Motorola released on or before July 11th 2010 in reference to the Droid X and efuse:
"Motorola's primary focus is the security of our end users and protection of their data, while also meeting carrier, partner and legal requirements. The Droid X and a majority of Android consumer devices on the market today have a secured bootloader. In reference specifically to eFuse, the technology is not loaded with the purpose of preventing a consumer device from functioning, but rather ensuring for the user that the device only runs on updated and tested versions of software. If a device attempts to boot with unapproved software, it will go into recovery mode, and can re-boot once approved software is re-installed.Checking for a valid software configuration is a common practice within the industry to protect the user against potential malicious software threats. Motorola has been a long time advocate of open platforms and provides a number of resources to developers to foster the ecosystem including tools and access to devices via MOTODEV at http://developer.motorola.com."
If you want a link, google it youself because I'm not your secretary. Motorola announced the Droid X would be equiped with Efuse back in June of 2010. Just because you failed to educate yourself on the product before purchase it is not Moto or VZW's fault.
Also, in order to gain the needed info or files etc you would be following the websites that specialize in this info. All of which were abuzz and shooting all sorts of news about the locked bootloader ever since the June announcement.
So in short, WAHHHH. If you fail to research something you purchase the fault is on you. And yes almost all research on a product can be conducted in 10-20 mins with Google...
Well I have had the DX since January I believe. I came from Omnia 1 and 2 and eventually starting my journey with a pager (beeper). I have Gidgets Gadgets Gazoos along with a wife and KiD .(Follow me I am going Somewhere with this) My past 3 Phones DX O2
O1 Were all AWESOME!....when I first got them... I did my research etc. (big Screen CHECK, touch CHECK 8mb CAM check, free stuff CHECK memory CHECK eyecandy CHECK!
Lets GOOGLE, Ok Yay VZW ___for sale BUY a ___ from SAMSUNG. Users This GUY LOVES IT this guy hates it.{edited to comply with Terms of Service} My Razor you just turn on? hmmm. AH I NEED A PHONE. got it, works great, FLASHING LIGHTS SHINY METAL.
Time Has Passed, I have been emerged into a New world known as a digital community I am learning vocab (diction) I am exploring software and how to be a chef....learn learn learn read read read... I HATE MY PHONE.
Moral of the story,....There isnt one, but good for those who have the time to research all they say they do. One question, I wonder why the ones who complain about complainers always had done all the research and expected whatever issue at hand before they bought the merchandise. But more Intriguing is WHY the heck would you buy it and be ok about it.
I agree it is what it is,, Right now what it isn't is a verified ota Gingerbread update, that I didnt know existed 3 months ago..but i WANT IT YESTERDAY ALREADY..
phew Im done
OK, time to look at this realistically, out all the users of the Droid X, I would say only 10 or 20% of the users know what a bootloader is or how they can void their warranty messing with the device original design, so many are complaining about bootloader being locked because they read about it somewhere but don't know what it is, also if they didn't read about it somewhere they wouldn't notice or even care, many of them still cant tell you what or how this effected their device. I think the security on BL isn't the worst ideal because if a user screws the device its usually not lost forever if your knowledgeable enough of the device.
Its best to leave the device alone if you do not understand what you are getting into because you will just be getting upset for your mistake and be without a device and maybe a contract if Verizon gets involved..
As for the recent update of Gingerbread for the Droid X, if the update follows the one that others have seen the OS will bring other issues once installled because a number of 3rd party apps are not GB ready. (But of course this will be blamed on the OS not the app as usual?? )
It should be a FREE (e.g, Included) feature for the price we're paying for these phones & plans. IMHO.
Cody21 wrote: It should be a FREE (e.g, Included) feature for the price we're paying for these phones & plans. IMHO.
Cody I would say that this would be nice but giving everyone on the network this feature free could quickly degrade the level of service in my opinion because I have read post of users bragging about using 100 GB a month of wireless tethering with mobile hot spot...
Could you picture the level of traffic the network would experience if it feature was free to all users? Which would mean the network would have to expand to handle the traffic and this just isn't sound from a business point..
I guess I see your point Wildman. But I'm still a bit ambivalent about it. To your point, VZN indeed heavily markets this Tethering feature with these new phones. But then they make it so cost-prohibitive for MOST people that we can't justify the added expense on top of everything else. So their business model seems to be (1) provide a cool feature, then (2) charge a LOT for it in hopes that not many customers will enroll in it, thereby saving bandwidth. IMO, it's this that causes a lot of people to try to "get around" the expense and seek out their own "solution", if you get my point. (Ditto with VZ Navigator @ $10/mo.). And frankly, I would never suspect that Tethering would replace most people's ISP service -- at least not under 3G ... it can be painfully slow for the larger downloads like pics & video. Maybe 4G will change all that?
just my 2 cents.
Maybe we should do something like that to get our contract canceled by Verizon. That way we can go to another provider that has a more leading edge and thought process about updating phones when a new OS is released.
Touche'. You definitely are.
