Going to the darkside... to the iPhone

It is pretty obvious to me that Samsung, Verizon or whomever we wish to blame for this farce of a phone, doesn't care about fixing it, nor updating it.

Therefore, I am going to be getting an iPhone 4S.

I honestly regret getting the Charge. It makes me ill knowing that Samsung/Verizon are laughing all the way too the bank on this one.

See ya!

FWIW, if you have a Charge in good shape, you may be able to get up to $300 for it on Ebay/Craigslist.

The Iphone is what it is.....same as every other iphone, locked down like my daughter on prom night, with very little customization available. But it is steady and it ALWAYS works....or at least much more so than any Android device. If it weren't for the lack of LTE, I would have gone to the dark side with the 4S myself. As it is, I'm addicted to watching Netflix over 4G at lunch, and I don't think the experience would be near as good over a 3G connection.

I had an iPhone 3G. Apple made it useless with the iOS 4 update before my contract was up (I'd bought the phone the day it was released). Apple never bothered to fix it (there are a gazillion stories and posts about it - search for iPhone 3G slow with iOS 4). Apple just assumed you'd pay to upgrade to the iPhone 4. Useless as in you'd many times have to wait for 30 seconds to a minute just for the keyboard to recognize you were typing, map input and other performance issues, etc.

Assuming Apple is any better than Samsung is a mistake.

iPhone 3G = 2nd generation iTouch

iPhone 3GS = 3rd generation iTouch

iPhone 4 = 4th generation iTouch

iPhone 4S = 5th generation iTouch

As an Apple user since the iTouch 1st generation first came out in 2007, I have used all the the different generations.

The big problem is choice versus stability: sure you can root your Android phone or jailbreak an iPhone, but with what purpose? Many people are thankful their phone just "works" without worrying about some new mod or app that allows them to sideload apps.

I have a Droid X through Verizon on a different account, it works, its not particularly fast and is a "clanker" by today's (December 2011) standards. I also have a Galaxy Tab which works well for Netflix, discharges rapidly if I use Swiss Watch Book.

HOWEVER, since 4.21 al the iTouches have good battery life, and the latest iOS5 dvices even better battery life.

I wonder, in closing, if we are seeing the same divide between Droid and iPhone users as existed between PC and Mac users?

I'm new here so apologies for steppin on anyone's toes.

Oh, the iphone vs Android debate has been battled out in more than one section of this forum.

Two comments.

The "customization" argument doesn't float. Yep, I love widgets and creating folders with customized names and jpgs for apps and bookmarks. Setting up my homescreens is a lot of work. All of which bites when it is lost after every hard reset.

A reset (the prototypical Android troubleshooting solution) takes minutes. Getting my phone set up again the way I like it, takes over an hour, each time.

Trade me that (customization) for a phone that doesn't need so many resets? I'll take you up on the offer.

The main reason this thread caught my attention is the "dark side" comment. I've called "them" everything from cult members to Kool-Aid drinkers, but I have decided to separate the phone from the people that have them and everything I've known and thought I've known about Apple.

Theirs is a good product.

My Android experience has not been so great. I was a big fan. My update is in early '12. Rumor has it the iphone 5 won't be out until late '12.

So, I'll probably try one more Android. A 4S won't do it for me (too small, no 4G). If my next phone disappoints like my phone (Droid X) has, I will definitely go with an iphone 5.

The "dark side", and I know it was meant jokingly, is fine with me if the phone "just works" without bugs, glitches and horrible battery life.
