Today's the day. No more infinite data plan for $30. Now, the $30 will get you 2GB and $10 for all gigabytes over the limit. What gets me is the rational that it's because of 4G and its faster download speed. Come on, a gigabyte is a gigabyte is a gigabyte regardless of how fast or slow it's downloaded. That's like saying a quart of milk changes to something else if you put it into a gallon container.

i just talked to cs and as long as i stay with a phone that requires a data plan, i'm grandfathered with unlimited for current pricing.

new folks with data required plans are the only ones affected by the new pricing.

Anyone who doesn't currently have a smartphone or BB with an unlimited plan is affected. You can't even have the feature phone unlimited plan and be grandfathered in.

Huh? It's been reported by Verizon that those with feature phones who got onto the unlimited data plan so they could be grandfathered in, will not be. The feature phone unlimited data plan is different than the smartphone or BB unlimited data plan.

So, it's not only new customers who are affected is what I'm trying to say.

I don't think you're getting what I'm saying. If customers added an unlimited data plan to their FEATURE phone before 7/7 thinking they would be grandfathered in, they WILL NOT BE. You MUST (and it has been reported by Verizon) have a SMARTPHONE and an UNLIMITED data plan to be grandfathered in - you CANNOT have unlimited data with a feature phone.

I guess I assumed wrong, not unusual, but I assumed the ones who already had a smartphone (regardless of what kind) and had an unlimited plan for $30 knew about the grandfather clause. It's the newbies who, starting today, who will be tiered. Sorry I didn't fill in all the details.

I think it's retarded to charge more for the data plan just because of 4G.It's not like they are going bankrupt or anything.Verizon is just greedy.I honestly hope that this bites them in the **bleep**.Call it what you will.I know when I'm getting raped,you can try to sugar coat it and call it "surprise sex" but the correct term is still rape.

I am grandfather'd in,and i can read hence my previous post bear21,thanks for clarifying and dumbing it down for me,I just think it is wrong for Verizon to do this,I think they should make improvements with the mbps if they are going to charge more for the services,meaning,"make that there intronet more fasterer".Instead of stuffing there pockets with more money than they can handle,they should stick to the agreement they made with their customers and provide quality service.We are number 15 when it comes to internet speed,the country that invented it.......sounds reasonable right?

So you realize that improvements of the network to support 4G requires network upgrades that cost the company money, basically they are not charging more for using the data but the network improvements required to make the feature possible to even exist.

On my our plans were Grandfathered in on the unlimited.  Now if we were to get another line that would be different story.  but as long as we just do an upgrade an or if we would pay for full Retail on the phone we can stay unlimited for as long as we want. The Manager i know real well said the smartchoice plans we have is the best there is an was the best you could get for a smartphone.

I don't believe it was the building of a 4G network which caused Verizon (and AT&T along with TMobile) to drop the unlimited data plans they had in play. It was a small percentage of people who hogged the data lines. Those people who downloaded tons of movies and watched them. Streamed music 24/7. In short, some people who used 10GB or more, slowing down the networks.   It's that small group who will be paying big bucks for data usage. I believe that most people use less than 2GB on a monthly basis. I believe that last month I used a bit over 1GB. As I said at the beginning, I don't care if its 1X, 3G, or 4G, a gigabyte is a gigabyte. Speed (or lack of it) doesn't change it.

Verizon Indirect Dealer Memo

As of this morning we have been given the green light to start training on the data changes Verizon Wireless is making effective 7/7/11.
$29.99 unlimited data will be discontinued effective 7/7/11

• EXISTING CUSTOMERS- That have our $29.99 unlimited data plan WILL BE GRANDFATHERED IN, they will keep their unlimited plan after 7/7/11
• EXISTING CUSTOMERS- That current have the unlimited data WILL BE ABLE TO UPGRADE AND KEEP the unlimited data feature (No known end date on this as of this moment)
• EXISTING CUSTOMERS- That add lines post 7/7/2011, will NOT be able to choose the $29.99 unlimited data feature
• NEW CUSTOMERS- Any customer that sets up service from now, until 7/7/2011 WILL BE ON, AND WILL BE GRANDFATHERED into our $29.99 unlimited data package
• NEW CUSTOMERS- Any new customer that set up service AFTER 7/7/2011, WILL NOT be able to choose the $29.99 unlimited plan
• BUSINESS DISCOUNTS- Currently our business discounts apply to the $29.99 data plan on the primary line only. Most discounts are 20% despite whatever monthly access discount they have
• BUSINESS DISCOUNTS- After 7/7/2011 data discounts will only apply to the $50 and higher data packages on the primary line.
• Discount break down ex. of customers with a 20% feature discount on their primary line. ($50-20%=$40/month for 5GB and includes the business e-mail feature)
• – ($20/GB vs. $40/GB+ Business e-mail )

New data pricing for smart phones is as follows:

• $30 for 2GB with $10/GB overage
• $50 for 5GB (this also includes business e-mail at no additional charge) with $10/GB overage
• $80 for 10GB (this also includes business e-mail at no additional charge) with $10/GB overage

So all changes effective July 7th, 2011.
Existing customer KEEP their $29.99 unlimited data plan
If an existing customer upgrades from a feature phone to a smart phone after 7/7/11, they will NOT be able to add on the unlimited data package. They must choose from the new data plans.
Anyone who sets up new service with unlimited data, upgrades from a feature phone to a smart phone with unlimited data, or customer currently on the $29.99 before July, 7, 2011 will be grandfathered in.
These changes also apply to employee plans as well (personal accounts w/work discounts applied)
SO, This is a huge time for us to set our customers up with the right package for them! We only have 14 DAYS remaining for unlimited data, and until the new data pricing takes effect. (14 days to setup new customers w/unlimited data, and customers upgrading from a feature phone to a smart phone)
PLEASE, PLEASE make sure we take advantage of this heads up and get our heavy data users set up on these unlimited plans before they change.

My problem with this is that I was going to upgrade my son to a smart phone. Now i'm not. God only knows how much DATA my teenager would use. I have a Droid X and my husband has a Droid, my son wants an android phone now too. My husband and I both have unlimited data and unlimited texting, I refuse to pay the same (or more with overages)  for my son to have the same phone but not the same features. And we don't have 4G in our area, so why would I pay for that.
