Does anyone know of a way to change the screen from always being north up?  I like the screen to be up in the direction im pointed like on my old Garmin.

I only see North as up when using the flat map route or when I can't get a GPS signal. Standard turn-by-turn acts just as you say you expect. Make sure you have GPS turned on in settings - that is, satelite GPS, not assisted/cell tower. Hope this helps!

I had the same misunderstanding, I think, of Googe Maps Navigation.

--

I think if you set up directions and just drive with the maps displayed, the image will display with true North (and true South, East, and West) but without lots of detailed navigation graphics, prompts, and instructions.

I think if you push the navigate button, Google Maps Navigation brings you to a screen that looks and functions very much like VZ Navigator - with true North indicated by a small colored arrow off to the side and fake North figured prominently as the forward directions you are driving in: sort of in an up direction from the center of the map, though the icon for your car never really goes up - rather, the map/road/terrain keeps updating in such a way that it keeps coming to you, depending on which way the road goes and whether you drive straight, turn, etc; the same goes, in navigation mode, temporarily when you turn left or right - the screen will portray your car inaccurately as turning east or west, etc.

In contrast to a prior posting, I now like Google Maps Navigator more than VZ Navigator. I find the Google  app to be more stable and quicker. VZ Navigator hanged, crashed, and froze on me a few times.

Ok, I think I may have written my post a little off.  I do get the rotating map when I have a destination inputted, I was just wondering if there was a way to have the same stationary arrow and rotating map when just using Google Maps.

I looked on all the settings, the same as you did i'm sure and there is no way to do that.  Then, I was looking @ the map and thought "that would be confusing as hell".  I pictured holding rotating a paper map while holding a compass...basically the same thing you want google maps to do.

If you ever found a way to get the map to do what you want, i think you would quickly change it back

Sounds like Google Earth can do what you are talking about. If there is a google earth app, perhaps you could use it to do what you are talking about on your phone; unfortunately, I have no idea whether any phone app for google earth makes the requisite use of GPS. Of course, google earth integrates with google maps, though I would be surprised - even shocked - if it integrated with Google Maps Navigation.
