Check the Text Message application settings.
I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

I would also like to know. I tapped on the message and it went away so I don't know what it was for or how to remove it. I checked various websites, including the verizon messaging page and none of them show me being opted in to receive these messages.
Mine was on the Droid 4... And there's no text message history. This was a special message that I have no way of retrieving and/or removing.

All capable phones are opted in by default; you can adjust the alerts via the app settings (should be in your Emergency Alert app). Here's more info:

I can understand the importance of turning alerts off and I can assist with that. Please let us know which alerts you are receiving. Are they email alerts, amber alerts, usage alerts? I have listed steps below to turn off usage alerts and amber alerts.
1) Sign in to My Verizon.
2) Click the next to Minutes Used, Texts or Data Used in the My Usage pod (to the right of the My Device pod under My Account).
3) Click Manage Usage Alerts.
Note: The Usage Alerts screen displays.
4 In the When to Alert section, uncheck the bubble above threshold.
Note: Customers can opt out of each category: voice, messaging or data.
5) Click Save All Alerts.
If you're receiving amber alerts. Listed below are steps for how you opt out.
Step Action
1 Go to My Verizon and sign-in with SSO password.
2 Select Messaging.
3 Select Add an Alert in the drop down.
4 Select the My Alerts tab.
5 Turn ON /Off or Delete for Amber Alerts will display with the options at the right side.

I do not have any alerts on my Verizon. I did find an app installed called Emergency Alerts that I was able to opt out of every alert except Presidential Alerts because it was disabled. I can't uninstall that app and I can't disable that alert type. <Comments deleted per the ToS.>
