I read a report on engadget a few weeks back that stated VZW expected to have over 100k phones in their online inventory at release. I don't know how accurate that number is or if it was just someone's speculation.
Edit: Droidlife shows a screenshot taken earlier this week showing only 9,000 in stock at VZW Memphis warehouse. So that 100k number was probably just speculation.

Well, if there were 10 warehouses across the country, I'm sure that number could be close. I have no idea how many their really are, but I could believe they'd have 10 warehouses across the country.

I am not sure how many droid x's are sold per day. However there was a study that went on. Apparently 160,000 android phones are sold per day. Probably even more then that these days since more new android phones are coming into the market.
Android cofounder and Google vice president Andy Rubin just announced at the Droid X event that 160,000 Android devices are being sold per day. That’s up sharply from last month when Google announced that 100,000 android devices were being activated each day. As recently as February the number was just 60,000 per day. Article

It's unfortunate that this happened. I'm sure they had to expect at least 50% of their Incredible back orders would switch over.
On a positive note: We can rest assured that we will be getting quality updates since this phone is selling FAR better than expected. Stores expected their inventories would last till next shipment a week away, yet they sold out within hours.
