HTC Droid Incredible causes blue screen of death when plugged into Windows XP PC

I've had my Incredible for over a year, with no problems plugging it into my Windows XP SP3 PC to transfer files (I use "Disk Drive" mode and simply drag files between devices).
Now it no longer works. Once I plug in the USB cord, the PC freezes mostly, and I cannot open any applications. When I unplug the phone, the blue screen of death comes up and I have to reboot my PC.
I tried a different USB cord, a different USB port, pulling out the Micro SD card -- nothing helped. I am on Android 2.3.4 -- could this recent upgrade have broken this? I don't think anything changed on the PC that would've caused this to break.
I finally had to fire up my Win7 laptop in order to get the photos off the phone -- that worked. But I really need this to work with my desktop like it always used to. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

OK, I did some more Internet research and found a fix. I saw on several Android forums people with a similar (though not exactly the same) problem, and they said the following steps fixed it:
- Dial ##7764726
- Hit Call
- Type Password 000000 (that's 6 zeros)
- Hit Feature Settings
- Choose CD ROM
- Click Disable
- Hit menu, commit modifications (it will say no item changed)
Here is where I found this:

I followed those steps exactly, and now my PC no longer crashes, no more BSOD, and I can transfer files again from phone to PC with no problem. I can't really say what this fix did, but it works!
Thanks, Gary

May sound like a obvious thing, but have you installed the drivers before plugging in...

Wildman, thanks for your suggestion. As the phone worked fine for a year with the same PC, I don't see how the drivers could be an issue. Obviously they were installed correctly by Windows the first time I plugged in the phone, since it used to work just fine.
I did consider uninstalling and reinstalling the phone driver, but I could not find it in device manager so am unsure how to do that (nor if it would help). I looked at the HTC page but it only offers the HTC Sync software, which seems to be more than just drivers. I never needed HTC Sync before and prefer not to add any software to my system that isn't needed. I just want to drag and drop files as I did before. Any other ideas perhaps?
