Is there a way to make the HTC incredible keyboard wider and also, how do you access the symbols on top of the letters without going to the numbers screen?

TO access the top characters just hold the letter and then it will give you a selection from there.....so answer long hold the key. To get a different keyboard goto the apps store they have a few, just be careful some do not support auto complete or might have other bugs... hope that helped

You could alway use the Compact QWERTY keyboard. It puts two letters per button and you type like T9.
Long press your "mic" button to get to keyboard settings.
