So is there a difference in the factory restore procedure as done from the "settings/privacy/factory data reset" and the procedure using the power and home buttons?

Not 100% sure but I think the power button one is just encase your UI/launcher crashes. My sister has an Aria whose UI kept force closing. I ended finding a way around it so she could download another launcher to preserve her contacts before we factory reset it, but the other option was to do a factory reset via holding a specific sequence of buttons.

*#*#7780#*#* Will also do a f. reset.

Paco is right, the factory reset using power/home is usually used if you can't boot into the OS.  But other than how you get to that option, i think it is the same.

There isnt any diffrence except the way with using the home and power button is used to recover from a non boot status.
Power Device Off First.....

1. Hold Home Button and press power

2. Screen will show a Android with a triangle with astrick

3. Let Go of Home Button and Power

4. Press Search Button (Far Left Button)

5. A blue menu will show at top of page, scroll to Format Device

6. Select Yes to verify

7. Allow format to complete (Information at bottom of page will go through a few steps)

8. Once Format is complete Blue Menu will show at top again, select Reboot

Note: Use volume up and down to select opinion and use camera button as Enter,,,
