Has anyone else had the screen on their device break without dropping it?

I purchased a droid ultra approx 45 days ago. Yesterday the phone started acting funny, returning to home screen while playing games, apps turning on by self, screen flashing from app to app without even touching the phone. I took it to the verizon store today. The tech did a soft restart with no luck. She was about to take it to the back to be looked at when my boyfriend said it was cracked. The tech and I both thought it was the screensaver but after closer inspection the one lower corner has an internal crack in it. This phone was in the case sold to me by the store. It has never been dropped but it does get very hot when being charged..I was told that was normal. Of course as soon as the crack was found I was dismissed, nothing we can do, send it to the insurance place. I just spent over 700$ in the last couple months on the phone and accessories (including the case I was sold). I asked how a little, unnoticable crack could cause the phone to act that way, no answer except there was nothing they could do. I was then informed that I should have purchased an otterbox so it would not have cracked??? I bought the case the store recommended, now a different person acts like it's my fault for buying the wrong case. The phone was not dropped, but if this phone requires an otterbox to keep it safe why was I not told this. Verizon can look up my reciepts for the purchase, I did by a case, the one suggested by your employee. I know This will probably be ignored by the verizon folks, but if you have a droid ultra apparently you also need an otterbox.

Hi RPospisil,

I'm sorry to learn that your phone has a cracked screen. I am a consumer too and I truly understand your discontent, as I would be upset if this happened to me. While dropping a phone is the most common reason for a cracked screen, screens can also break by excessive pressure while in pants pockets and others. I would not venture to guess how your phone's screen cracked, but phones can break even with a case on it. Lamentably, manufacturers' warranty is void once physical damage exists and processing an insurance replacement is the best alternative.
