Had my X for 4 months and have changed the ringtone several times, so I know how to do it. Today I noticed that my ringtone was different from the last one I set. So I went into SETTINGS/SOUND/PHONE RINGTONE and it was correctly set to my selected ringtone, but that is not what is playing when I receive a voice call. I tried changing the ringtone to different ones in the menu and when I touch that ringtone it plays correctly, but does not set. When a call comes in I get the same (default?) ringtone regardless of which one is selected from the menu.
Also, I thought the phone ringtone name used to display beneath "PHONE RINGTONE" under the "INCOMING CALLS" bar in the "SOUND SETTINGS" menu. I don't see that now, but maybe I am wrong on that one.
Any ideas on what is going on? I have tried powering the phone off and a battery pull to no avail several times. Any ideas on what is going on?

Sounds like to me that you may have connected the device to a PC in Mass Storage mode, this causes this exact issue because the ringer is stored on the sd card and the phone can not connect to the ringer file. Usually a restart will resolve this.
To avoid this you can set device to charge only when connected to PC, also you can try using Power Widget because it works well for me, I have the device set to charge only and when I connect to PC and want to use Mass Storage option I click the trigger widget on my desktop and when I chick again it disconnects and restore settings... I am really not sure why the stock option doesnt do this.
