Is there a way to make homescreen flip to landscape using the accelerometer without sliding the keyboard open?

Unfortunately no, Android doesn't support landscape Home Screen mode without opening the keyboard. I do believe that Home Replacements such as Panda Home, Open Home, or AHome supports this.
Same thing with G1, and it's realistically not so bad.

it is "doable" somehow.
when I have mine in the multimedia dock and am on it's home screen, then hit the home icon,
it takes me to the home screen and it is in landscape.
I know it is magnets that put it into this multimedia mode, but it still seems possible somehow.

It's probably because you have it in the multimedia dock, and when you press home, it kind of just stays there, it really doesn't respond to it *not* being off the dock.
Take it off the dock, turn it sideways without the keyboard being slided out, and if doesn't go into landscape mode, it doesn't go into landscape mode.
All programs should, however.
