Hotspot losing 3G signal randomly while device stationary

I have had a problem using Mobile Hotspot since I first got the Droid X three months ago.  The 3G will go away at random while it's connected.  The phone will be sitting in the same spot without anything being moved, and all of a sudden the 3G icon goes away on the phone and I have no internet service (i.e. I get the 'page cannot be found, check your connection' error).  When I move it, it will come back but sometimes only for a minute.  The icon will keep disappearing and reappearing at random.  While this is going on, I have full signal strength (as far as what the phone shows in terms of bars).  I only use my hotspot at work, so I thought it might have something to do with the building interferring with the 3G signal, but I tried setting the phone outside on a patio and the 3G still randomly disappears.  I know it's not just the phone because I got water in it and got an insurance replacement and it does the same thing.  I also have a coworker who has a Driod X and she has the same issue.  I have another coworker who uses Verizon hotspot on her Thunderbolt (we do not live in an area with 4G yet), and she claims to have no issues with connectivity.  The only other thing I can think of is if there is some application that both my coworker with the Droid X and I have that is interferring with the 3G signal.  After reading other posts, I have made sure that the phone's WiFi is off.  I also changed the channel in the security options, but I can't see how that or the security type could be the issue since the problem is receiving the 3G signal and not passing the signal onto the connected devices.  Thanks for any suggestions or help anyone can offer.

Try a App in the Market called ( Restart Conection by Dazbradbury ) when you get it loaded it'll be in the App Drawer were your other apps are. Press on it an for a few seconds an it'll Pute a widget on your main screen once done just tap it it'll restart you connection without having to shut the phone down. Then when your connection restores try doing your Hotspot. an see if that works for ya.

I don't have any problem staying "connected."  The hotspot stays connected (i.e. the hotspot icon stays black and the hotspot check box stays checked), it's the service itself gets interrupted and the 3G icon goes away. So the connection itself doesn't change, it just loses the 3G part which of course means no internet.  I don't have to reconnect when the 3G goes away - usually I just move my phone physically and it will come back.  I just can't continue to live with moving the phone every 30 seconds to keep the signal.

Is this occuring in one particular location in your home?  The Den or Kitchen perhaps?

If so, can you reposition the phone to get a stronger more consistent signal in the way you would do with a wireless router?  Higher up or closer to a window?  Optimum position determined experimentally?

The more knowledgeable folks are probably going to jump alll over me fro suggesting this, but you might look for a retransmitter which would pick up the verizon signal and retransmit it for use by your phone.

It's occurring at work - that's the only place I use my hotpot.  And no, there is no position where the 3G won't drop.  It's not constant interruption either.  It will sit one place and be fine for a half hour, then the 3G will start going in & out.  Usually if I move it and try at different spots the 3G will come back, and sometimes it stays and sometimes it doesn't.   As I stated, I even tried positioning it outside the building on a patio with clear open access to the sky and it still comes and goes.  And a retransmitter is not an option - it would require either wiring or placement of an antennae or connection to the internet, none of which are an option for my workplace.

I should also note that on my previous phone (Samsung Omnia 2) I had the mobile broadband connect (where I tethered and used VZ Access Manager) and never had any connection issues other than it taking ten minutes sometimes to establish the connection.  Once it was connected, though, it stayed connected with appropriate signal.  With the hot spot, it usually stays "connected" but the signal drops out randomly (i.e. the 3G icon on the phone will disappear and reappear).  I wish the Droid X had the tethered option - I would totally just do that.

Thanks for your inquiry! I have not seen this issue on the Droid X. Do you lose 3G when using the internet connection on the browser itself, or only with the hotspot? Do you have any battery saver, task killers, antivirus applications installed? Some battery saver applications will periodically disable the data connection to save battery strength. If you have a task killer, make sure 3G Mobile Hotspot is on the ignore list, or remove the app completely. Uninstall any antivirus applications. Are you connecting to a VPN  (virtual private network) on your computer?

Let me know if you are still having issues. We may need to submit a trouble ticket to our network team to see if something in the network is dropping the data connection from the device. You can send me a PM with your name and number.
