I was so happy to receive the 2.2 update, but i got the following:
slow start and shutdown
constant random rebooting
battery felt hot most of the time
battery drained faster and took longer to charge
apps crashed like crazy
a bunch of bloatware running in the background
sometimes the phone would get stuck rebooting over and over
i was ready to throw this phone out the window...even jump over to another carrier, thats how mad i was.
then i decided to do a factory reset...
and everything has been great ever since.
the phone is back to how it was before...functional and reliable....with the benefits of froyo....
startup time is as it was before, quick
no more app crashes,
and to stop the stocks and news apps from constantly launching, i went in to the sync settings and turned them off...
battery time is back to what it was before froyo [which wasnt that great but hey..]
it's sad i had to go through all that nonsense just to get it working but i'm glad i did the factory reset.

What is a factory reset and how is it done? Do I then lose all memory on the phone such as my contacts and my pics? Is there a way to store these to the memory card first, then retrieve them?

yes...you will lose them all. you can use backup assistant (free through vzn if you have an online account set up on their site) for contacts ("people") or gmail will have your gmail contacts backed up. pics can be moved to the sd card (if that's not where you already saved them). however, i believe it's a tedious process and you'll need astro (or another file manager app). i would plufg the phone into your pc and move all the pics to the pc or the sd card that way. a factory reset will restore the device to it's original condition (except it will have 2.2 not 2.1). email, calendar...everything gets wiped.

Is it easy to do a factory reset?
How do I do that? Should I take out my SD card first?

I called Verizon Wireless customer service this morning because my screen would not time out even after trying to adjust it in Settings and my battery life was even worse then before the update. I got a woman who could not have been more helpful. She walked me through a complete reset and restore, including backing up my phone with Gmail. By the way, I did not have to take out my card first. Now my phone is working much better. I have always had good results calling VZW's customer service for technical support and recommend it highly.
