My Droid X was everything I imagined it would be and more until I did the update . Now alot of my apps freeze, lag, or skip, the battery life sucks, and the phone runs hot. I've used the search feature on here but I have only found guides for the other devices.
If I wanted a slow phone, I would've kept my iphone 2G
Is there any way I can return to 2.1? Any way at all? Please help!

Unfortunately, there isn't. But Verizon will not admit that they pushed out an untested, poorly engineered "update". They want you to assume that it's your responsibilty. It's your problem and you must fix it by doing a factory reset.
This phone functioned perfectly before this "update". Now it's a nightmare like the BlackBerry Storm I returned two years ago.

Many Droid X owners are anywhere from dismayed to distraught over this crappy "update," myself included.
One possible thing you can try:
Go into Settings, then choose Privacy.
Uncheck the Back up my data and Automatic restore options. This should keep your device from attempting to save and reload your previous settings.
Factory reset.
Then rebuild from scratch.
I used this and it vastly improved the performance of the phone: all battery/hot run and general performance issues improved vastly.
Still have issues with audio, though. Think I've isolated it to the bundled Music app. Every time I use it, it plays a file then shortly thereafter the phone tells me it can no longer recognize MP3s. Reboot fixes it, but still a PITA. I've switched to Doubletwist player to see if that avoids the problem.
MotoRizon says they're working on a patch. Wonder what else that fix will ruin?
Best of luck to us all.

A factory reset will automatically download the Android OS, however, by now it just may be 2.2 and not 2.1

I do Factory reset but all customisations remain former.
