How to upgrade to Android 2.2?

This is a dumb question to ask, but when Android 2.2 rolls out for the Motorola Droid on the 6th of August, how exactly do I upgrade to it? Will I have to download it manually or will it do it automatically or something like that? Thanks. :smileyhappy:

Sorry to appear dense, but can "Firmware version 2.1 -update1" (which is what my software info states) really be the same as "2.2", or am I looking in the wrong place?

No, 2.1 update-1 was the previous update.  It sounds like you have received/installed the latest update yet.

I would rather see a link to download to PC then update OTA. Less likely to go squirrelly on you as would an OTA update (intermittent signal lost to cell tower). I would prefer offline just for that reason. Besides, a 45 Meg file downloaded over 3G @2Mbps approximately would take about 20 minutes were as my FIOS 35Mbps can get it done in less than 1 minute. (gives me 19 more minutes to explore 2.2 update features) :smileyhappy:

OTA is fine if you do it at Home over Wi-Fi using FIOS

Motorola has indicated that 2.2 will be rolling out to the Droid the week of August 2nd. There are "rumors" of 2.2 OTA updates for Droid in various locations, but so far I've not seen any confirmation.

During the 2.1 update VZW rolled it out over time, with a small batch the first day and slightly larger batches the rest of the days until all devices had received notification. No one has said that they'll do it that way this time, but I don't know of any reason that they wouldn't repeat the previous process.

With the previous update there were plenty of locations that you could download manually and update, however, this option isn't for everyone.
The OTA updates are much simpler for average Joe to get through.
