How to use Droid with Unlimited Data while tethered to phone

I am understanding that if I use the Droid as a Hotspot that I will be charged for it even though my phone currently has unlimited data.  If I change plans, I lose the unlimited data, but if I don't tether the phone to my laptop, it will be charged as a hotspot.  First of all, I haven't been able to get my laptop to connect to the internet through the Droid at all.  It has always been tethered to the laptop.  My laptop has an internal network card, so I don't know if it will try to connect to the Droid causing "hotspot" charges or not.  I am totally confused.  I don't know what all of the little icons mean that you can turn on or off at will.  I understand the one with the jet plane to be used when they ask you to turn off all elecronic devices, but the one the looks like a satellite and the one that looks like radio signals are a mystery to me.  Do I use the green button at all that says 3G Hotspot or just leave it turned off.  I want to be able to use my phone as a modem for my laptop like I used to use my Blackberry Smartphone.

Do I need to take my laptop to the local Verizon store to have them connect for me?  I just don't want some outrageoous charges that I am not aware of.

Thanks.

The "hot spot" (untethered) method requires a monthly plan to use it ($20/mo.)  ..... If you haven't signed up for that, it is doubtful that it will even work - or at minimal should prompt you.  I haven't purchased that plan so not sure how it gets activated.

Your manual (online if you want it) has the definitions for each of those icons at the top of the phone. e.g., The "satellite" image displays when the GPS is active.  there is a separate icon for WiFi  ... etc.
