I got 4.08.605.2 to Install!

Now by no means should it be so diffucult to get an OTA update to install, there certainly is an issue but I got it to work finally after hours of web surfing, forum reading and failed attempts. My Market now even says "Verizon" not "Sprint"!! I found most of these directions from user giskard from androidcentral forums

First thing I did was to download app2sd from the market, move all apps to SD that will. Next I used the app to delete all cache from all of my applications (Nice Feature). I then deleted the top few apps with the largest file size (Now I know you may have plenty of room accoridng to phone, but this is necessary due to the bug in 4.06 release plus if its free ones you can just re-download anyway)

Then booted into HBOOT and deleted all cache from the phone (this does not delete any files/settings off of your phone) directions are from user giskard from androidcentral forums

Boot into recovery
- Press and hold Power, Choose "Restart" option
- When screen turns off, press and hold Volume Down and Power
- When the white HBOOT screen appears, use the volume button to move down to “RECOVERY.”
Press the Power button to select “RECOVERY.”
When the triangle and exclamation appears, hold the Volume Up and Power button at the same time.
Using the volume button, scroll down to “Wipe cache partition” and select it.
Select "Reboot system now"

After the phone comes back up go into your phone dialer and checkin with google and dial *#*#2432546#*#* the numbers will dissapear it means it worked.

Next I went into Settings - Date&Time uncheck use automatic provided values and set the date to one month in future (by default your phone checks every 14 days for an update from what I read, this forces it to check again). Go back to settings and about phone and then system updates, it may say you are up to date, close out, give it another moment then go back, it eventually prompted again for the update.

This may seem all convaluted, which it certainly is, but this was only way and order of doing things that I could get my phone up to 4.08. I hope this works for somebody else, but it definetly worked for me and others with our same issue. If somethjing breaks while you try this I am not responsibile. :smileyhappy: Just sharing what worked for me. Good Luck!

I tried all of that and it didn't work, had to manually update. for those that have tried everything including above and can't get the update do it manually, but hopefully this will do the trick for you. This method has been posted in other threads also.

Couple of things My phone still only have froyo on it.. When the phone is powered already [running] press and hold the power button will give "power off" option next to airplane mode mobile connection, vibration mode and such, but no "restart".

So I take you meant power off instead of restart? [If not disregard below.]

Second from the blank screen if [power off] if I press and hold power and volume down, it simply just reboot, same thing if I just press power wait for the first or second white screen, and then press and hold power and volume down. So I'm guessing I misunderstood your directions somehow.

I had an older install, where the only option was to Power Off, which I did and these instructions worked great.

Ok, I was able to do the cache clearing, and downloading the the update, however it still fails to install, getting the same low on storage message each time. I had tried twice to this now, and it's not getting through installation. Factory reset is not an option for me as I won't spend all that time to redo my phone as it is now. Anyway thanks for all the tips.

th69 did you clear your cache and make sure you have more then 600MB of phone memory free? the froyo does not have the restart option fyi for the readers.

Am almost done clearing cache above 600 MB...but how do I restart the OTA update?? I cant get it to ask me to update again...keeps saying its up to date, but then I still only have Froyo?!

I had to retry three times as I needed to clear space in phone memory.

The installation is pretty fragile. I had everything lined up and it so happened that when the install program wanted to reboot the phone Backup Assistant was working and killed the reboot. So I had to start over again with advancing the date and doing a checkin.

HTC or whoever engineered the back-up needs to make this process a lot more robust. A non-technical user is might have a terrible time with this.

Im glad this worked for some people, also, anybody still having the issue with text messages there is a hotfix released by HTC that resolved the text issue, first go to settings -applications- then check off "unknown sources" then from your PHONE go to this address in your web browser [direct download removed] it will download a small file and install, this fixed my text messaging issue. This was released by HTC and verified by Verizon to help resolve the issue

After updating to gingerbread, and getting the 4.08.605.2 some people are having issues with text messages.

From your phone web browser, not pc Enter dl3*htc*com/misc/inc8049*apk (replace the * with a "." did not use the dot to avoid a hyperlink to download being created).

First, I want to thank you for posting this for people. It's amazing to me how both VZW and HTC have dropped the ball on this. Only your instructions led to a completed update. The average consumer doesn't have a clue about this and would have no idea that their phone hadn't completed updating. It is ridiculous the gyrations we have to go through to make this update work, but more ridiculous is that HTC never fixed the memory space problem. I can't imagine buying another HTC phone as a result, make that another 3 since we have three of them.

I tried just clearing the cache, and that wasn't enough, it did reboot with the update, but didn't install, I actually got a failed install warning message. So, I had to go in and delete apps, but first I deleted updates from apps like Adobe Flash and Reader, Google Maps, Google Market, Voice Search, Gmail... Lots of space in those. I got the free memory to 500mb and tried again.

One word of warning - having patience during the process. I got the down arrow with the arrows circling it for a few minutes and had to not-patiently wait... Eventually a progress bar appeared and the screen went blank again, and then the phone rebooted to the Android Boot Animation and stayed there for minutes...

By the way, my phone never let me go a year ahead, it immediately would correct it. But going a month or two or three worked just fine.

I am now at 4.08.605.2, and we'll see if my "low space" warning comes back once everything gets update again.

No problem, I figured I went thorugh alot to get it to work myself, might as well post it for everyone else. Now onto my Galaxy Nexus I picked up yesterday!

Well this old Cogger got the update when it came out accouple weeks back an so far things are looking Good. i've had my Inc. for over a year now the only complaint is i have to hook her to the charger when i want to stream winamp other than that an accouple other minor issues she's still doing better than those New shiney 4G ers that have came out with many issues to boot an a 4G system that goes south evertime it's pushed alittle hard or when a new model phone is issued :smileyindifferent: wonder why! i'll keep my Inc. an my X for a while longer Till they croke i Quess.

P.S. if you want give a thank you to some one for help on instruction or just for Advice just click on the KUDO box an give them kudo! it's like getten an IceCream without the sticky ness! :smileywink:

Thank you! It saved me from having to have a Verizon employee read me the script for a factory reset. This was the better way to go.

Oops, I thought I got it to work. After the download it told me I didn't have enough free space, which I had 604 MB, so I tried again with 606 MBs free...to no avail, so now I have 622 MBs free land it says my battery isnt charged enough, but I have it plugged in to my charger. I'll let you know if it works, but not feeling very confident.

Fantastic! I had seen some of these tips spread out, but this really put it together and finally after what seems like months of false starts I got 4.08 to install. I had to try twice, and remove virtually every app that I could re-install easily (and which would actually remove themselves completely) and clear out every bit of app space and message space that I could find. Now I have to do the same thing for my daughter's phone. I have to say I'm looking seriously at Droid Razr for my next phone. :smileysad:
