especially since installing 2.2, I have noticed that my e-mails will disappear withing a matter of minutes of receiving them. This is only happening on the POP3 e-mail system (my g-mail is fine). What is causing this and is there a solution?
Having similar problems since the Incredible update. Of course tech support from Verizon and HTC claim no knowledge, as per usual, no help there. Would greatly appreciate any help or input from folks with similar pop3 issues!! THANKS!
There is no solution! This is a new FEATURE on 2.2 upgrade.
Once e-mails are gone from your pop-server, Android 2.2 will refresh and delete every previous e-mail from your phone.
We should be grateful, for this new feature. Don't know why, but that's what I was told by Verizon and HTC tech people!
Apparently it keeps my phone from being clogged up by e-mails! Instead there is room for them to add useless apps like Amazon MP3, VZ Navigator and 3G Mobile Hot spot.
I am so grateful!!
This is an absolute nonsense.
I talked to Verizon last night and they said they had not heard of this problem. They went through and did a factory resest of my phone to see if that corrected the problem, Of course it did not and I had to go and reinstall all my apps and redo everything I had set up. They told me that if it did it again withing the next few days to give them a call and they would escalate it to HTC and may have to get me a new phone. I have a feeling since I have seen this with a lot of different threads that this is probably a pretty widespread problem espcially for those that do not delete e-mails. I had to set mine so that it did not delete from the server though it still deletes from my phone. I am now using my g-mail though you cannot add any attchments other than pictures whereas the POP3 can add other attachments.

When you set up your email, or after you updated to 2.2 did you go into your mail settings to ensure the , 'Delete Mail off Server' box was NOT checked for each email account?
"Delete mail on server" is unchecked on my phone. Nothing is different to before 2.2 was uploaded. Of course my outlook that pulls e-mails from the server is set to default not to leave e-mails on the server after they are pushed to my home computer. But outlook saves a copy of all e-mails in a default folder why couldn't the phone do the same? It did before 2.2 was upoaded.
I did set up a POP3 account on here to see what happens and sure enough it deleted. So I remembered to uncheck the box and sent a message.
The email notification did arrive. I never went to check the email and an hour later the icon was gone and there was no email. So yeah there is an issue there. Guess I quit using POP3 mail just in time.
I started a thread on this last week ( the day of my upgrade.) Occasionally it seems to have fixed itself ( this weekend I had emails stay on for 2 days ), but eventually they just all disappear at once . It only happens with my POP3 roadrunner account.
Here is my response to this subject that I posted in a similar thread

I called VZW tech support last night to tell them my phone was still deleting emails and they told me it was a hardware problem and that I could go to the VZW store and exchange for a new one (since I am under the 30 day period). I went to the store today with in mind that this was more or less likely a software problem (2.1 vs 2.2) and that is what the store told me. They confirmed this when we used one of their store models with 2.2 on it and it did the exact same thing. They told me that exchanging the phone really would do nothing because the same problem would happen again. It is because the Droid was not exactly designed around email like a Blackberry. They basically told me that I could exchange for a BB or wait for a fix or an app that works with POP3. I chose to wait because I do not have my phone because of email (though it is nice to know it would work; I am happy with just Gmail).
As for the server delete vs not delete, I had mine checked to not delete but it still deleted. Oh well. I guess I will wait for an update. Gmail will still open the same attachments (though you cannot download them directly to your phone; there is an app for that though). It just will not email though attachments if they are on your SD card (you can forward them though).
I am still happy with the overall performance of the phone (minus POP3 problems).
This definitely seems to be a software issue. I thought it was my phone. Probably a move by Google to get even more people to switch to Gmail. The other option is to make sure that your Outlook or email program is closed when you are not using your PC. SO while you are mobile the mail will be on serve. You can also configure Outlook to leave messages on server. If PC is downloading messages that is when mail disappears form server
Try deleting the accounts you have configured on the phone. Then go to "Manage Applications" and clear the data from all of your mail related applications; lastly, recreate the POP accounts to sync your mail.

I too noticed that the email now stays on my cell phone as long as it still resides on the server. This wasn't the case before. The cell phone would delete the Roadrunner POP mail even if it was on the server.

I'll admit I am not a tech person, but I am 99.99999% certain this tech support guy is wrong. His theory does not explain why Android POP mail handling worked perfectly before, but changed right after the Froyo update. Come on Verizon, this is not rocket science!

This does not work either! In fact, I went ahead and tried that again. Deleted both California Roadrunner POP3 accounts, and added them back in. Cell phone still deletes POP mail if it has been removed from the server.
When it comes to POP mail handling, our smart phones are not so smart anymore.
Did you "Clear data" from the Mail application? Did you have any data in the phone storage?
I have tried resetting the whole phone which lears everything. The word I am hearing in many of the threads is that this is a feature and not a problem. I am not fully sure that is accurate but this is something that most do not like (especially when you get an e-mail in and it deletes within minutes read or not). In my case, mine would delete whether or not I left it on the server. I did go back to the VZW store and we tried my account on one of their phones with 2.2 and it also deleted the e-mails. They basically told me that I could exchange for a Blackberry or just wait for an update or an app that handled POP3s. I chose to wait because I am not tied to my phone for e-mail (my Gmail works just fine). So hopefully, soon, they will have an update for this issue.
I immediately noticed this problem with 2.2 update, and agree with everyone that I wished they'd left things as they were in 2.1. my workaround, which may not be perfect for everybody, is to change the settings to either never delete emails off server or delete them after a month (hopefully long after I'll need to refer to them on my phone). I have my hotmail account set to "never delete" because the chances of using all of hotmail's storage are pretty slim, and my ISP email set to "delete after 1 month." I access both on my computer through an apple mail client app (changed server settings in "preferences" there). emails stay on phone until you delete them. this way I have to manually manage the emails on the phone, but don't inadvertently lose them due to an automatic "disappearance" courtesy of android.
This is kind of weird. My HTC Incredible phone had 2.2 installed when I bought it couple weeks ago and it does not delete the emails. Unfortunately, this is NOT the behavior I want. If I have deleted the emails online or downloaded them to my PC, I don't want them showing up on my phone. I am primarily a desktop email user and don't want to delete twice, especially given the cumberson delete process in on the phone. BTW, GMAIL works fine but verizon email does not ( OK, it works the way people on this thread want it to work and doesn't delete).
I guess it could be a hidden option that is interpreted differently in the two versions of the phone. This may mean deleting and restoring settings for people who upgraded could solve the problem. Could also be a a release level issue. I am at Software Number 3.26.605.1 . There are a mess of other version numbers in the About screen and I don't know if this is the applicable one.
