If I'm in Europe, can I use Skype on Droid Charge(via Wi-Fi) to call US phone numbers?
Obviously there's no voice or data roaming for Verizon 3G/4G/CDMA phones in Europe.... (or am I wrong?)
Thanks in advance!

Don't know about the Skype workaround in Europe (tell us all if you go there and try it!), but I am pretty sure you will need some workaround. The Charge has a dual-band CDMA radio for 3G and a 4G LTE-specific radio for 4G. It was aimed at the US market and at Verizon in particular because of the the Long Term Evolution system that Verizon has rolled out and is continuing to. My understanding is that GSM is pretty much the exclusive network type available in Europe and that it requires a quad-band radio with a couple of frequencies that the dual-band does not have.
CDMA was an invention of Qualcomm is has been implemented largely in the US as a result.

Hello WCMack,
That was a great explanation on the situation. Just to confirm, Europe uses GSM for their wireless network. There are third party apps that will allow you to make calls via wi-fi on a wi-fi enabled device. This is largely due if wi-fi is available and if it's free.
From my experience, I was able to make wi-fi calls on my Iphone 4 in Greece without any problems last month. Since we don't own any towers in Europe, the service is hit or miss. Feel free to update us when you get back.
Enjoy your trip!...

Hi Sandra W.. Last year (spring of 2011) I could use skype on wifi but only from my computer, not from my phone. I was told that it was some kind of agreement between skype and verizon. This year I have the incredible 4 and I am going over again. I am hoping things have changed and I will be able to make calls using skype mobile when I am connected via wifi. Has anyone heard or experienced skype in europe from a non-global phone since summer of 2011? Thanks, Jack
