I'm certain that I set up my phone correctly before flying to Italy.  I'm on day two now, no network, no connection, just frustration.

anyone help, please.

Just to check, which steps did you do?   Are you using the supplied Vodafone SIM or another one?

If the Vodafone one: did you call Global Services to get it activated (and international access added to your account).

Most importnat: Have you set the network mode to GSM (rather than CDMA)?

You probably want to call Global Services, using another phone!  From Italy, you can call toll-free dialing 800 90 5825

then at the tone enter your Verizon Wireless Global Support Calling Card Number + PIN (these would have come with the phone).   Otherwise, you can call collect, +1 908 559 4899

If you are using your own SIM (which is usually the best way!) you need to contact that network provider.

Thank you for this solution. I have not yet had success but will confirm the steps you suggested. I did activate my sim card and I am on the gsm mode. I will try to call in the morning.
