Incredible OTA Update 720p, Hotspot, Boot Animation

Due to the possible update to Froyo 2.2 (combination 720p etc) update rumored to roll out soon I am closing this thread. This thread started as a 720p, Hotspot, Boot Animation thread way before it was decided (vzw) to roll them all into one update. This thread evolved into 2.2 talk eventually and became a useful one at that. Problem now is it's not titled correctly, and better/actual 2.2 threads are available. Additionally, (mainly) I do not want this site to be loaded later by users seeking help (post 2.2 update) and gettting totally confused as to what this is all about, or getting wrong information. So I'm solving this thread and it's closed.

What I have learned is the update was released to HTC employees to test on June 28th, that is supposedly why the phone says HTC and not Verizon.

It supposedly will also fix the garbled voice, Signal issue, and correct the signal icon to show a truer signal strength. And it is not the Froyo update.

FROYO is the newest Android Version. Currently most phones are using Android 2.1 Eclair. All of their "major releases" are labeled with a desert name. Froyo was released but wasn't finalized until like last week. Now that it is finalized the work can begin on mutating it to the Incredible. Then it has to go through the approval processes. Then it has to wait in line for the rollout. Then a trickle test to see if the system works then rollout 200,000 at a time or so until everyone has it. It may take a minute. Also I am sure they will be wanting to create a whole new Sense UI based around the new capabilities. I kind of like Sense but it does slow this process down somewhat and in reality since Stock Android is putting a phone button on the launch bar area and Full flash support available Sense may be little more than bloat ware slowing the phone as much as the process for upgrading.

I think this topic is a perfect example of irresponsible reporting on the internet... False reports produce false hopes and ultimately, frustration and confusion. I wish/hope that in the future that this "stuff" about OTA's would be based on "ACTUAL" evidence instead of speculation.

I cant really understand how HTC could have this ready for EVO, Desire, and other Sense phones going to China and Moto Droid, Droid 2, and X are all ready for froyo but Incredible is still in holding pattern. They had an almost ready update on July 3rd (that many have installed already).

I agree.... my source I have is quite high up and it was last week we chatted when he reassured me its a for sure thing that its the end of this month. Now before I kick him in the BLEEP I will defend him for being wrong for two reasons. 1 - Verizon has a strategy for everything and maybe the OTA date got pushed back at the last min for something I could never imagine. 2 - Even if he's wrong its not far off due to other phones on the Big Red getting it within the next couple weeks. oh did you see HTC SPRINT pulled the EVO update? lol.... its not ready yet according to a HTC press release. Sprint messed up again lol...

Are you sure Sprint pulled the update or did you read that HTC pulled the update from their website because it was not meant to be available direct from HTC. The leak was not the final version.

Maybe Sprint also delayed the update but I didnt see anything about that.

You are correct on the HTC server. second, my source has nothing to do with the release, but everything to do with management high up. he already messed with an updated phone a week or two ago. I wouldn't be surprised if vzw is trying to push all these phones at one time, although I'd think that'd be a tech support nightmare. well, yes have a happy Froyo weekend free of nightmares and let's keep our chins up. Our day is coming!

To be honest, no one at VzW will be able to tell you accurately when an update is coming unless it's about a week or so before the update on average. There have been no reports of any updates for the Incredible lately. I would venture to guess that a few VzW employees read the rumors, and start spreading them throughout the company and then are thought of as the official truth. I was guilty of it myself back in the days of 2.1 for the Eris. As of now, though, the Incredible doesn't have anything slated and anything at this point is still probably rumor.

I'm thinking that with all the supposed Moto p.r. agreements with vzw things have changed. Rumor was that vzw and Moto have this heavy advertising agreement and so on. I'm thinking this whole Froyo madness between manufacturers and carriers has gotten so bad that dates are bumped around like crazy. It's fairly safe to say that HTC has the build ready for this phone and the evo. It's all a question as to what the manufacturers want when it comes to competition and then the carriers competition. Official dates? No, I don't think anyone knows till the day or two before a OTA update. I think vzw likes to be confident in products more than the competition so they balance demand vs quality with quality much higher. I'm a little tired of the subject now lol... I need a technology reality check!

I wouldn't care nearly as much but the dropped call issue is suppossed to be addressed by the OTA that is merged with Froyo. So while Froyo is exciting, I kinda want the update so my phone works better.

Made two phone calls, one to Verizon and the other to HTC, some interesting information was presented to me and here it is!

Verizon: Spoke to CS Rep: Stuff that may not have been mentioned...

Changes to the GMail communications as well as other typing sources.

Corporate users get remote wipe and other tools to control employees phones.

Increased boost speed and better compatibilities for file formats.

Verizon apps inserted.

Auto update of Android market.

Adobe Flash implemented.

(Interesting fact was that he said he was reading it off the update release paper)

HTC: Spoke to Tech Rep: Stuff that may not have been mentioned...

Boosting of corporate accounts security.

Ability to use Bluetooth commands.

Better voice recognition.

Faster Sense UI.

(Said he was getting his information from the Verizon preview release form, when asked what that was he said its Verizon's basic view when first previewed, said other form where off limits to his department and that release is now all on Verizon.)

Reason how I was able to squeeze a little more information was that I said I was an employee who uses Android devices for my business (which I do) and I need to be told of all the update information so I can plan around it, hence reasoning for all the information for corporate accounts.

I asked both of them if they can email me a copy of the information and this is what was said:

Verizon: I can not release this paper to you as it is just for Verizon's CS and not intended for the public, all information given to me was currently available to the public except for the corporate changes which he was allowed to give out.

HTC: This information is only to be given over the phone and can not be given.

When asked for the release date these were their responses:

Verizon: We at the CS level do not know of releases until the day of or sometimes not even then. (I pushed for a guess) It should be released soon around the mid to end of August, however that is a rough guess and may come sooner or later.

HTC: We do not want you mad at us if it is not released on the date we told you however an estimate would be sometime in the 3rd quarter, and when I said August, he replied that it should come then if Verizon allows for the update to go through, when asked why Verizon he said it is now with them and they may want changes to the software if they are not satisfied with it.

So there we have it.... we shall see if they would just stop bumping release dates everywhere...

On a side not about the "source" I feel **bleep** trying to convince that this guy is actually important in the vzw field. I'm not giving any info away on him in fear of him getting in trouble. Besides it's not like he's a VP or anything, just very involved in product releases. I didn't get to talk to him recently due to he lives out of town and I'm not going to call or text him via vzw if ya know what I mean. So I'm just going to have to assume something happened and bumped the date back. I'm convincing myself that it's going to be this week along with the Moto Droid push I've been hearing about.

KlineAJ, The HTC version is most def released so they were right. Well I hope they are LOL it's an HTC rep. I was told by my source that the update has been in VZW's hands for weeks now hence the "leak" of the update. So you can see my frustration when it comes to rumors and release dates. I know they have it, but they have a plan for how they want to push it. Could be a million reasons. I'm just tired of waiting and it makes me want to start rolling my eyes at Big Red even if I've been a loyal customer for 10yrs now.

It just seems a little silly to me that if an updates available why not push it already? Is it that big of a deal? Who knows...

I think this update when released won't fix all problems. I don't really know who to point the finger at, HTC or vzw. I do know that this phone lacks not only support but accessories. (compared to other more popular phones)
I refuse to be another Eris owner. If this update makes any aspect of the phone worse ill be phone shopping again.

stop telling people who want their phone to work better to be patient. it's your fault if you're ok with a phone that doesn't have the best features and has call quality and battery life issues that could be fixed with an update. why would anyone get a hight end phone like the incredible and not want it to have the newest features and work like it should?

well if the evo is getting it, then i think you now know who to point the finger at. and yes, the lack of accessories is absurd. no dock, no case for an extended battery......i too refuse to be another eris owner. this was the FIRST of all the greatest devices this summer....and it appears that they have already given up on it? i may just have to check out the droid 2 when it comes out. i'm a (or was) a huge fan of htc. but vzn seems to pay them no mind? the eris had so much potential, and so did the inc.....but it seems that vzn will focus on motorola and other devices (lg, samsung, etc). i still love the phone, but there is soooooo much more potential. and when we do get the update it would be nice to have a case for a battery that would actually support watching an entire movie in hd.....and a dock to use to actually download said movie!!!!

yes, clearly verizon doesn't like htc or the incredible and they are leaving it in the dust. they could at least give us two things. one would be real information about what is taking so long and the other is the maintenance update that includes hd video. i heard that another lesser phone is getting one of those maintenance updates from tmobile. why can't verizon do that?

Beginning to think that Verizon Wireless and the Droid Incredible combination may have been a mistake. Sprint is looking better all the time based on what I am seeing and reading. It is a wonderful device but doesn't seem to be favored by VzW.

OK folks, Evo is a 4G phone and is the current flagship of HTC US. It got a little more aggresive in the update. That isnt on either VZW or HTC. However, if we dont see Incredible get it within 2 weeks, I will join the lynch mob!

Sprint has different testing policies. Verizon's policy makes a 2 month process from the time HTC completes the update. If any part of the update doesn't work it comes back and the 2 months starts over. Rules is rules and in one sense it is what keeps our network stable and larger than others. If you want bleeding edge you can do it, but there is a price to pay.

Yeah, I went through all this "wringing of the hands" and "drooling" when I had the Eris... So let me just be thankful for the DINC! It's miles better than what I had! I'm enjoying not dropping calls... a kickin' camera... and a fast interface! And I wouldn't have Sprint's signal strength anyway! When the update comes, then my phone will be all that the EVO has (for the most part) and the BEST signal and coverage. What good is 4G anyway without a network to back it up? I guess to say you had the status of having a "4G phone" is worth more to some people than me! As they say: IT AIN'T ALL THAT!

spoke with verizon again. we will get an update to 2.2. i think it will be in september. i don't see a separate maintenance update coming. time to either wait it out even though other phones are getting it first or go get one of those other phones. i plan on waiting

I think what irks a lot of people is that the EVO has gotten 2.2 before the Incredible. They have basically the same software (2.1 with Sense) moving to 2.2 with Sense. The Incredible was out a month before the EVO, and it's looking like it will get 2.2 one month after the EVO.

I understand the Moto Droid getting 2.2 first, it was out first and is stock android. I'm actually surprised that it hadn't gotten 2.2 earlier, considering how long the Nexus One has had it and they are basically the same as far as software goes. Anybody who got a phone with Sense, Motoblur, or Touchwiz understands that stock android will be updated first. But when a phone with a skinned android released a month later gets it first it makes you wonder why. Now if the X gets 2.2 before the Incredible, I am done sticking up for Verizon. I will be looking at ALL options when my contract is up, maybe even before. It should come on a first come (ie release) first serve basis in the interests of fairness. I have no problem with stock android getting it first, but with the skinned android builds I believe it's only fair.

I know that this is about the maintenance OTA, but since they decided to roll that in with 2.2, now those who have issues with their phone (audio drop out, low signal, grounding issue) have to wait even longer because they wanted to do 1 update instead of 2. Funny thing is the EVO got an update a few weeks back to fix those issues. What'd be nice is at least let us know when they're shooting for as far as release date. They could put any disclamers they wanted to, but at least give people an idea of when, rather than just "before Christmas". I've talked with both HTC and Verizon, and both say either "no info" or "talk to (the other guy)".

not really that interested in the really MINOR improvements and hype about Froyo, 2.2., etc. What is important is solving the problem of the garbled voice quality. This HTC customer service has promised.

Today I begged Verizon to give me an idea if we were looking at days, weeks, or months so I could decide to move to the X or wait it out. I just want my phone to work decently as a phone.

It is all about the call improvements not the froyo. I will love froyo, but I want to make calls.

So what was the result of the begging?

She could not tell me anything date wise but gave me a few options. I wont go into the rest of the conversation, but I am in waiting mode and no closer to knowing when.

What does your source say? He may have been wrong, but I love intrigue.

My take on his info is that it was legit, but something happened, (not surprisingly with vzw). Unfortunately he lives out of town so I can't get an update and I don't trust contacting him on vzw network. I don't want him to get in trouble. I know I know he sounds fake. Let me just say its my word he's real. I'm curious myself what really happened. Curious enough that even if I don't see him for a year I'm going to ask him to update all of us.
In other news...... is today the day ya think? I'm thinking by Friday we'll have it!

not today, not tomorrow, not next week. maybe next month? i've been laughed at for saying this fall or winter. but i am betting later than sooner. REALLY hope i'm wrong. how long after the moto droid did the eris get the 2.1 update? would it stand to reason that it could be that long after the droid and droid x get it before the dinc gets it (2.2)?

The change from 1. to 2.1 was much larger and DROID was vanilla while Eris had SENSE. Since EVO has 2.2 and SENSE, I dont think the 2.1 to 2.2 change will be that much longer for Inc as DROID.

With that said, I just want the FIXES!!!!!!!!!

Yea, I saw the fixes. I'm still probably gonna wait for the official OTA to hit before I try going that route (for the first time).

Spoke to a second guy I know out of NYC and he said the OTA Update is a few weeks away because of "bugs" in the software. Don't worry I'll keep trying...

I think the bugs are fixed. They have a new one that apparently came through a couple of days ago but it has to go through the testing. Now I don't know if the fixes have to go through as much testing as the first round but either way it's back in VZ's hands so it shouldn't be too long.

I e-mailed the CEO of Verizon Wireless about my idea that they request an optional Stock Android Rom be built for each Android phone so that people who are this obsessed about it can get the basic version and then choose whether to get the OTA or not when it comes out with all that Sense junk on it. Doubt they will do it. I imagine it would be a cost prohibitive and manufacturer disturbing kind of thing but it would be a consumer supported solution.

Unless something changes I'm going with my sources info listing a few weeks. They told me that until they get within a week or two they won't be able to give a date. So..... signing off this subject for at least a week unless good news comes in the form of an OTA update!

I spoke with someone at Verizon who called me after I emailed corporate. He said the update is expected within 30 days. (maybe 45).

He also reminded me that with software updates, you really dont know until a few days/1 week before.

For me, when the update shows up it shows up. I am not losing sleep over this. It was not all that long ago, if you wanted an updated device, you purchased a new device.

I just got off the phone with VZW. When I asked the lady about the Froyo she called technical support and they told her it will be released on August 18.

Dont count on it. Tech support RARELY knows very far in advance.

It wouldn't surprise me if it came out the 18th but tech support last week actually said "The update is pushing out tomorrow for Incredible"... it didnt. Tech support knows little.

We went into Verizon Wireless to correct a billing error on Saturday morning, and while there, I asked the rep if he knew when the update was coming. He said "Next week." Seemed pretty darn confident about it. This, coupled with the links you provided, make it seem like it will indeed start getting rolled out on Wednesday, August 18, which would be "next week," of course.

But, even if they do start rolling it out on the18th, that doesn't mean we will necessarily see it on our individual phones on that day. It will take time to get to everyone's phone. I hope my phone gets it by the end of next week or the beginning of the following week, though.

Off Topic: I can't wait to see what kind of phones will be available when my new contract is up in April of 2012. I wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of 3d (without the glasses) tech built-in, or dual cores. Maybe holographic tech, like Princess Leia in Star Wars? LOL

At a VZW store last week they said the date they had was still Aug 3rd-Aug 13th, so they dont know much!

Always seems like the phone I pick from Verizon ultimately gets ignored. Then again, with the speed at which cellphone tech is accelerating lately, I guess that's to be expected. But a little love, in the form of KEEPING THE CUSTOMER UP TO DATE WITH WHAT IS HAPPENING would be appreciated. Oh, well. Crossing my fingers for this Wednesday as the initial roll-out. We'll soon know, no thanks to any OFFICIAL definitive info from Verizon.
