My phone received an unpropmpted update yesterday. Now my contacts are gone, my SD card appears to be empty, apps need to be reinstalled and I cannot get Backup Assistant to work from the computer end! My huband's phone did not receive the update. What is going on?

Hi theatrerin,
I understand your frustration. To best assist you I have a couple of questions. What kind of update was performed (i.e.. Software update? Do you have a Gmail account? Are you able to use Backup Assistant on your device? I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Thanks for your involvement in our community forums,

The Incredible should back all applications and contact with Gmail or contacts with Back up Assistant. Please make sure the device has these loaded onto the device. What type of software upgrade happened? Please remove battery for 20 seconds and reinsert.

The same thing happened to me. HTC pushed out a firmware update, in what my guess is, so our phones function properly when Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) is released.
I haven't checked my SD card, but all of my contacts were erased, and all of my apps either didn't function properly, or at all.
There are two ways I know of to get your contacts back, but unfortunately you needed to already had them in place, and backing up prior to your data loss.
The easiest is through gmail, in which your phone will constantly sync your contacts with your online account. To do this, each time you add a new contact, it prompts you as to where you want them saved. I, unfortunately, had been putting my contacts under "phone" and not under my gmail account. Therefore, I couldn't retrieve them that way.
The other way is if you go to settings, then to accounts and sync, you should find something called "backup assistant". If you had this setup before, you should be able to simply tap it, put in your pin (that you created when you first setup your backup assistant) and hit sync.
I didn't have any of those setup, so mine were all permanently lost. I ended up going into my text messages, which did remain after the update, and adding all the numbers back in that way. I figured I had probably texted most of those important to me recently, so that was a good place to start.

What version does your phone say you have? If you go under settings, then the about phone area, check the system updates part, and see if your phone is up to date. If it says it is, backup one step to about phone, and go to software information. What versions do you see there?

The same thing has happened to me! I received an update last night to software number "3.26.605.1" and build number "3.26.605.1 CL264707 release-keys."
It happened while I was asleep and my phone died because it was not plugged in. When I plugged it in and started it back up, it told me a new update had been installed. Then I noticed that everything was gone including a few apps. All of my apps that would want to start at startup decided to as well (even though I had them so they wouldn't) and now I can't even open them. All my apps are crashing and everything is just awful. I've been reading on forums across the web where this has at least been going on for Incredible users for the past 3 weeks or so. Why has Verizon not stopped this update rollout and tried a fix?
I've never had any trouble with my phone up until now, but it is a total disaster. I have managed to load back most of my contacts (although a few very important ones are gone). My phone is pretty much useless right now. I might have to do a factory reset, but even if that fixes it, the trouble I will have to go through to fix it and set everything back up makes me angry. Especially when I'm doing it on my time for a mistake that Verizon is responsible for. I would honestly like some credit on my bill this month for this trouble.

TNbuckles,
Our system shows that last software update released by Verizon wireless for the Droid Incredible was the HTC (3.26.605.1/Baseband Version: 2.15.00.07.28) update. Additionally, this software update does not have the capability to download itself without a confirmation acceptance initiated by the device user.
For more information and details about this software update please visit the link below:

A factory reset has resolved issues like the ones described in your post for other customers. For instructions to do a factory reset please follow the link below:
