International Data Roaming

Like others, I get the annoying popup requiring me to click "YES" on the you are on an international network to use data every hour or so. But also, for some reason data on my phone has terrible reception so the cause may be that the data network is going in and out, so the popup appears every time it connects. I will have 4 bars, can make/receive calls, can sms no problem, but can't connect to the internet or get email.

In the Munich airport, I've used the Motorola Napoleon (A4500, yes that awesome phone that for some reason Moto decided not to release), the HTC Ozone, and my Droid 2 Global from the same seat in the Lufthansa lounge. All connected to data networks effortlessly except for some reason my Droid 2 refuses to do so. Data is also terrible at my workplace in Munich. I spent some time on the phone with Verizon, but basically amounted to checking boxes that I already checked in the data manager and rebooting the phone. I've also tried to select other networks (going out of automatic network selection mode) with no luck?

Does the Droid 2 Global have a problem with GSM data networks? To me this looks like a bug in the accepting of the "Yes" on the annoying popup (why else would it popup all the time if it wasn't a bug?) so there is a flag somewhere that isn't getting set. This phone is worthless to me while roaming without data.

i have the exact same problems. my travels take me to europe each month and the last two with this droid 2 have been terrible. did you get any help with your problem or are you still having the same issues. i have configured this thing till i'm blue in the face and need some help. my next step is to hopefully trade it off. for instance it has not even responded after over 30 minutes to the email notification for signing up for this forum. had to get the ipad out and receive the email. really frustrating. thanks.

I don't even try to set my roaming capability because Verizon pulled the rug out from underneath me when they changed the international data plan.  Now I just turn my data completely off and use a UK pay-as-you go phone.  My next step is going to be to unlock the phone and use a different SIM card.

Verizon international data roaming is falling apart.  I got the same warnings every time I lost service for 5 min.

A trip to South America in January, under the old system, was flawless.   My call in March to turn on international data roaming for Europe took an hour.  First to place order, then a second call to correct errrors made by rep on first call.  In addition, the new plan (US$104. for 70 MB) is a big price increase vs $60 per month flat rate on old plan.  After 12 hr in Europe, I got a text saying I had already used $50 in services.  International tech support confirmed this on a phone call, advising that I had already used my 70MB.  When my bill arrived it showed 10MB only which is still a lot for 12 hr.

I turned off my Droid and used my prepaid sim cards(several countries)  and wifi for a month(what a pain).  I lost 60MB of prepaid data and had to call to remind them to turn off International data roaming as they forgot to work the order on my return.

I have given up on Verizon international data and plan to port my 5 numbers over in mass at end of contract in 18 mo.

QUESTION:

I still have my old Verizion Blackbrerry(CDMA/GSM).  Could I unlock and use it with a prepay sim for overseas data in the future?  Or should I buy a cheap unlocked  GSM for overseas.  I have given up on Verizon international data and plan to port my 5 numbers over in mass at end of contract in 18 mo.

Sorry for all the troubles you had during your recent international travels. You can pull out the Verizon Wireless SIM card and replace it with local SIM card and enter the PUK code (We can provide that for you. To learn more, please PM me with your wireless number and a contact number). This will allow you to use foreign SIM cards on your device.

We are really sorry for the aggravation. We hope to be able to restore your confidence in Verizon Wireless, proving we are worthy of your continued business.

Thanks,
