Is anyone having a great experience with Droid X? Plus lots of shopping questions...

Hi. This message board is scaring me. It sounds as if the Droid X is nothing but trouble. However, when I went into a Verizon store yesterday to check out the Droid 2, I also tried out the Droid X and my initial impression was that it is phenomemal. And it has amazing specs. So now I need help deciding between the Droid X and the Droid 2 (the global one, but that wasn't on display in the store).

The Droid 2 Global makes sense to buy because it has the keyboard and it has the global capabilities and it comes preloaded with 2.2/flash 10.1 instead of taking the risk on over the air upgrades. Seems like a no brainer. However, that Droid X screen is gorgeous! it is perfect for the nearsighted! It made the Droid2 feel puny. The screen actually seemed more responsive than that on the Droid 2 (though it could have been my imagination because it isn't easy to work those phones when they are connected to the display).

1) Has anyone got the Droid X and upgraded to 2.2 android and is enjoying adobe 10.1 problem free? Anyone? Do I dare hope that person could be me? By the way those adobe 10.1 features are amazing. I can't imagine why anyone would buy any smartphone that isn't a droid with 10.1. I managed to watch TV news live over the browser, could access tv shows on abc over the brower, and it appeared that pbs kids internet games would work (I have kids).

2) Does anyone who was a devoted keyboard user regret the loss of the physical keyboard?

3) I'd like to use the camcorder/camera as a backup when the kids do something cute and I didn't bring the big camcorder/camera. I make my dvds in Corel Video Studio. Corel won't accept the 3rpp2 format that my current Voyager films in, but it will accept 3grp files from my husband's blackberry. Does anyone know if the Droid X and the Droid2 film in 3grp and will they work in Corel Video Studio?

4) If I don't go with the Global phone, does anyone have experience using wifi abroad for emailing and skype for phone calls? Is that a viable substiute? And what's this about not being able to use Droid X wifi outdoors in France?

5) I've been reading posts about people having trouble with codecies loading their videos onto the Droids. I did a little test and put a Mpeg4 file that I created in Corel onto the test Droid X, and it played beautifully. Was that a fluke?

6) I'm not happy to hear that Droids dump your video files periodically. Does anyone have success putting in video files and keeping them there?

I absolutely do not want to make light or belittle anyone having problems with their X. Yes, some people are having issues, but with the what, millions (?) of Xs out there and what, maybe a hundred folks posting about problems here. I wouldn't be scared because even if you have troubles, they can be sorted out by trouble-shooting or a phone replacement. As I've said ad nauseum here and elsewhere, I absolutely love my X. I've had it since Day 1 and I've had only a minor issue or 2 that I resolved or had help here getting resolved.

That is a "to each his own" question there. I do not need global phone capabilities. Flash can be downloaded and installed to the X (with 2.2, of course)  from the Android Market. The big screen of the X has been the best thing to happen to my phone and mobile data needs.

I haven't really stopped to see how Flash is working on my phone. I just know that the websites that displayed goofy little boxes with nothing in them now display that content just fine as well as Youtube.

I've never been a keyboard fan, always preferring an onscreen keyboard, so I guess I'm not qualified to offer an objective opinion. Except that if you ever try the Swype (I know it's loaded on the X) keyboard, you might never go back to any other keyboard, physical or onscreen.

No experience there.

Again...

Yet again...(Gee, I became a lot of help, eh?)

I've heard of only one case of that happening and I think it had to do with how they accesses their files from a PC or they had SD card problems. Wildman has had some experience with that, hopefully he will offer those experiences.

To answer the title of your post, YES, I am....

I also have had a great experience with my Droid X. I had one little issue with email when I first got it but I've learned to work around it and if you use gmail then it shouldn't be a problem at all. As far as the keyboard, I was a blackberry fan, never thought i'd get used the touch screen keyboard but it is very easy to use and i can honestly say after a month of having my droid i don't miss my blackberry keyboard at all. You can even dictate to it, how neat is that, I have used it and it transcribes flawlessly!

I bought my droid x online from the verizon store like i said last month and it already came with 2.2 installed in it, I am surprised no one else has posted that since I am sure i am not the only one who has bought one over the last month and got it with froyo already installed. Now maybe if you buy it at the store it comes with 2.1 depending on when the store got their stock but if you are so afraid to upgrade it yourself order it online, they overnight it :smileyhappy:

With that in mind, I bought mine, as I said, on the day they came out. I upgraded to 2.2 when it became available and didn't have any big issues, but I did go back and re-format without using the auto-backup feature that's been described here.

If you get an X, make it a point to check the firmware version before you do ANYTHING else. If it is 2.1, then let it update to 2.2 (if it doesn't ask you to update automatically, then press the menu button (button on the bottom left)  and go do settings/about/ and click/press/whatever "check for updates". It should find the available update and ask you to install it.

I also bought mine a month ago and it has 2.2 installed out of the box. I'm slowly getting used to the virtual keyboard and really don't understand Swype at all.

I bought the Droid X at 12:01am on the day of release.  I have had small issues since then which are quickly resolved.  Most issues have been with apps that were causing problems.

I have used the Camera and Camcorder and they both produce wonderful pictures and video.

As for using Wifi with Skype, this does not work.  Skype is tied to the 3G network, it will not work on our phones over wifi.  However Wifi data connections work fine anywhere you have a hotspot etc.

As for the keyboard:  I've had phones with physical keyboards for my last 3 or 4 phones.  I thought I would miss it but after about a week or two with the on-screen keyboard I'm good.  The Landscape keyboard is one of the best I have ever used.

I LOVE SWYPE! NO MORE OF THAT PECKING AT THE KEYS LIKE A CHICKEN! Takes some getting used to but it gets used to your personal swype style as well as words you frequently use! I live in Hawaii and once I manually type in a local word it remembers it and I can swype it in next time! You will not miss your key board! That's all I can help you with. My only peeve is with the calendar, it won't delete recurring items. Have to do from desktop. Oh well.

I love my Droid X. Its the fifth cell phone I have owned. The first four were with Sprint and T-mobile. Its nice now to have a phone that works and does what it is suppose to do.
