I am really eager to get the DroidX but really wish it had the front camera on it. I am thinking about holding off until the fall wondering if they will have one by then. Wondering if anyone else feels the same way.
The Droid X is what it is. I don't see them adding a front facing camera to it. As for my self a front facing camera is of no concern to me. The phones which do have a front facing camera are all Very low resolution and not really worth the time.
I was thinking about having it more for video conferencing not so much for taking photos.
I really don't see the infatuation with a front facing cameras, I see more negative than positive...
1. More peoples use it through network the more the network will be affected. (Network can't handle the load)
2. Carries will not allow unlimited data plans to remain due to the video calling feature. (To much bandwidth usage)
3. If using on wifi it just seems it would be smarter to use a web cam.
4. Why would you want to see someone while you talk to them, just go where their location is and talk Face to Face.
5. Why would a person want to walk around holding a phone in hand to talk to them
Even from a business aspect I just don't see the sound reasoning for this feature.. We have laws against "Driving while using phone... While Texting.... And next I see While Video Calling..
No disrespect intended but video conference from a phone is a new feature fad and things are getting crazy on how so many feel they need this for every day use.....
You definitely brought up valid points.
I am just a Skype video junkie. I love video Skyping all our relatives that are out of state. For me it would be one additional way to do that if I don't have my lap top with me. But as you mentioned when you are driving or on the go, the video feature really wouldn't do any good. So in that respect, it would be easier to not be tied down, being idle to video chat with someone.
Thank you for pointing out the realistic.

No.

I doubt there'll be a version of the droid x with a front facing camera. It's not really as big of a deal on the sprint evo and iphone 4 because so far it seems to only be useful in wifi. As far as I've been hearing and reading, it lags much otherwise even in 4g. And verizon doesn't even have 4g (yet). From what I heard when ordering my Droid X next years phones will support 4g and likely lead to potential front facing phones.
Yes, however the Motorola CEO recently went on record and said 4-new android phones will be out soon with a front camera for video calls. He did not specify what models they are.
Until then, couldn't you just sit in front of a mirror, focus the camera on your face and make your call?
I don't believe there is any way that the Droid X would be modified to add a front view camera. Things like that don't really happen. There may be a new Droid that will incorporate such a camera, but it will be a new product, with a new name, surely.
Personally, for my own needs, I don't have any interest at all in having a front view camera. I also view it mostly as a fad thing. I know we went through a surge of interest with Skype video capability when we first got it, but it wore itself out pretty quickly, and we all just kind of forgot about it. If an event occurs that warrants use of a camera, I can just as easily use my laptop with Skype, and wi-fi bandwidth to support it. I also can't imagine trying to walk and talk with the phone/camera held towards me at arms length. We have enough trouble now staying focused on our walks with the audio distraction of a cell phone.
To those who really want a front facing camera no their smartphone, that's great. It's just not for me.
Front facing camera doesn't excite me one bit. I love the large screen on the Droid X and with the form factor small enough to fit in my shirt pocket, a front facing camera would enlarge the phone to a point where people might not want it.
Besides, no one wants to see my ugly mug on their phone.....
