Is it a good idea to get the droid phone

All I've ever had is a basic phone the razr and the krzr. I'm really interested in this new phone. Is this a dumb idea for someone that doesn't do a whole lot with his phone? Is it worth it?

I would like to add to this.

Should I get insurance on the phone?

For some reason I go through headphones like crazy.  If I buy headphones from VZ, will they be covered under insurance?

Should I get the protective screen plastic?  Will it take away from the phone (ex. visuals aren't as sharp with plastic on screen)?

Should I get a cover for the phone?

Insurance: I did, because it would be very expensive to replace if I drop it in the toilet or something.  I highly doubt headphones would be covered by the insurance though.

Cover: dunno, up to you.  I don't like 'em personally.  I would worry about sensitivity being reduced on the touchscreen, as well as a degradation in aesthetics.  I prefer to get a good quality belt holster to protect the screen.

As for getting the phone in general, if you don't really use your phone for much of anything except for making calls, it probably wouldn't be worth it due to the $30/month mandatory data plan.  However, if you've never had a phone that's actually capable of being good for much anything besides making calls, you might use this phone more than you think you would.  Then it just comes down to whether you want to pay for the data plan or not.

I plan on keeping the phone in my pocket.  Is that bad?  I still have the RAZR and haven't upgraded a phone in about 5 years.  Since this isn't a flip phone, will this phone go crazy in my pocket while I'm walking since it's a touch screen?

The data plan isn't an issue, I want internet on my phone so I can surf the web when I'm bored.  I'm also looking to watch videos, listen to music and play games on the phone.  I have about a 30 min. train ride to/from work each day so I want to keep myself entertained on the train.

So those are the only things I need from the phone as of now and I don't need any hi tech stuff like blue tooth, outlook, microsoft office, mail sync, and etc. that everyone else is complaining about on the phone.

I was waiting for the Omnia 2 but I think the Droid is good enough where I don't have to wait anymore.

Oh yea, how's the call feature on the phone?  I heard you need to use an app to use the phone?  Is it a pain in the butt or is it something that's just overblown by people?

With the exception of surfing the web on your trip, you might want to consider an iPod touch and just stick with a dumb phone. That said, if the web is important, then the Droid should fit you needs nicely. So far, I'm pretty happy with mine and I've been using WinMo for years. I would recommend insurance on a phone this new and costly and also a screen protector. I have one on one and can barely tell it's there. No issues with touch sensitivity at all. I personally don't like to carry a phone with such a large unprotected screen in my pocket. I'm too clumsy and would be afraid that I'd bump it on something and crack the screen

If you are an intense user of Microsoft Outlook you may not be satisfied. I'm not right now. Hoping that there's an app that will do seamless syncing with Droid like Palm does or I'm probably not going to be able to use this PDA. I like many of its other features. Maps is awesome as is the Facebook app. If DROID had that good of an OUtlook emulator I would be happy.
