Is there anyway around this? If I have to is it best to do it before I get the phone?

As far as I can tell it IS required, but it's incredibly easy to do so from the phone. Takes no more than 5 minutes and you don't actually have to use it. It basically just uses that google account to hold all your info.

No, you don't *have* to, but you should. Here are some pluses as to why:
-You will always have your contacts backed up, for free. GMail saves them on their server and is constantly syncing when you make any changes.
-Calendar syncs up as well.
-You always have your receipts through Google/Gmail if you make any purchases on the account.
-You look cooler
-There are applications such as GDocs that allow you to access your Documents through Google's "Documents" tab online.
-Makes your life completely easier

LOL
As much as adventure that would be, going without the wife's permission would kind of be going AWOL. Something that I fear if I do, I won't get fed when I come back.
However, if you need more help -- feel free to message me. I can try my best to assist you with anything you need.
