doubt you'll see the mobile hotspot since the chipset apparently doesn't support the phone being turned into a true wifi AP. That app that is available after "modifying" your phone only creates an ad-hoc network which isn't supported by all devices. As for usb tethering, it's definitely capable but Verizon apparently can't find a way to charge for it. The 3D app drawer can be easily acquired via launcher pro.

i know u can get mobile hotspot from gingerbread roms cm 7. And 3d app launcher from gingerbread launcher or adw launcher e x.
launcherpro is too buggy to consider using it on my phonee. Even my cousin with droid incredible has bug issue.

CM7 is AOSP (source) based which has a lot of features that WON'T make it to the OG Droid IF Verizon decided to update it to Gingerbread. The AOSP base for Froyo had mobile hotspot and usb tethering built in and 3D app drawer but neither one of them made it through Verizon to the Droid. As far as Launcher Pro, I never had any issues with it when I had the Droid granted I haven't used it in a while but a lot of people have good luck with it. I'm a fan of ADW and the horizontal sliding app drawer like is on the Fascinate

At this time, the Android 2.3 software update has not been released and currently we do not have a release date. However, when the update for the 2.3 becomes available it will be sent directly to your phone with the steps on how to install and update your Droid.
Thanks,
Ed

Ed,
I notice in your post that you say "when" instead of "if" the original Droid will get updated to 2.3. Is this an official statement from Verizon that the original Droid will get an official OTA update to Android 2.3, and it's just a matter of time? Because Motorola's websire still has the original Droid's software status at "Update to 2.2 is complete". To my knowledge, there has not been an official statement that the original Droid will get Android 2.3 as an OTA upgrade, so this would be news.

This needs to happen now! This version would have prevented my phone from being hacked. Check out http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-news/129312-mother-all-android-malware-has-arrived-roots-phon...
I guess Verizon removed the infected apps on booting your phone but this is a root item and installs a backdoor. I am doing a hard reset and making sure SD card is wiped clean to be safe. 98 emails were sent out from my phone last night. Links were to inappropriate sites. Not sure if malware or virus installed if you clicked on one.

If that hole was plugged, another one would be found and exploited. That's the downfall of the market being open. A little common sense goes a long way and then you don't end up playing russian roulettte with market apps.

"That's the downfall of the market being open"
Security through obscurity == fail. Android being open has done nothing but help the platform, people who develop for it, and end users. No other mobile platform offers the same level of transparency.
If there are security issues, they need to be noticed and fixed. The only way this happens in any kind of reasonable time frame is the software being open to everyone. For an example of this, look no further than Firefox. A security study showed that Internet Explorer had critical unpatched security vulnerabilities for 93+% of the year on average, while Firefox was at a mere 6%. Chrome and Safari are even lower.
