Is there a way to transfer my texts from my old Droid2 to my new Droid2?

I have a new Droid2 (side note... I replaced a damaged Droid2 - recommend getting a cover for your Droid... I dropped my sans cover... and the glass now has a big spider web crack in it)

What I want to know is there a way to transfer my texts from my old phone to my new phone?

Thank you.

Unfortunately at this time there is no way to transfer texts from one device to another. There may be a text application that allows this in the market. But keep in mind all applications are from third party users and are download at your own risk.

If the text messages are all sms messages, you can use sms backup. It creates an xml file to the sd card. Put that card in the new phone install the application and use the restore function of the application to get your messages back.

thanks... but how do I know if the old phone texts are "sms" texts?  Texts from the texting function that comes with the Droid2 (no special app).  And if there is an app.. I no longer have service on the old phone... already turned on the new one.

I think I may be out of luck

If the text messages didn't have any attachments, then they are sms messages.

If you have access to wifi, you can put the old phone in airplane mode and turn on wifi and connect to a network. As long as you still have your google account loaded in that phone, you can get to the market. Just make sure you have a sd card in old phone and find the application in the market.

Thanks... still a problem

I am able to get the wifi going on the old phone but when I go to click on the Market app... I keep getting "A network error has occurred. Retry, cancel and return to previous screen".  Any ideas?

thanks again.

Did you try to get to market today? Because everyone is having problems with market today and maybe the last couple days.

I can get on with my replacement phone... was able to get to market and then download the SMS backup app... so not sure that is the problem... it may have to do with fact that I am trying to do this on my old phone which has been deactivated (of course I wish I had done this before I did that and activated the new phone)...

On the old phone I am able to connect to Wifi but when I go to the market I keep getting the error.  May just call it a night and retry tomorrow... it could be that I just am going to lose all my saved texts.

thanks for trying to hep :smileyhappy:

You have the gmail account loaded on the old phone?

All is not lost.  Try this route.  I can't remember but does the Droid 2 on an on-board file explorer? If you have Astro or Estrongs file explorer on the new phone, make a backup of SMS Backup to the SD card.  Put the sd card in the old phone , turn on the ability for third-party apps. Install the apk you saved from the other phone. Run the backup. Swap the card to the other phone properly. Restore on the new phone.

Good luck. :smileyhappy:

great idea... I went into my new phone - SMS backup app - changed it to save on SD card... then I swapped cards... on the old phone... turned on the 3rd party thing... but when I go to the apps section and click on SD card... nothing shows up...

I went back to my new phone and the SMS backup program is gone... so I would think its on the SD card I swapped...

So where do I find the SMS backup program/install it on the old phone?

Sorry I am so not familiar with this stuff and I do really appreciate your help... I think we are so close :smileyhappy:

The key here might be in the gmail account as Ann suggested. Can you confirm that the old phone is still associated with your gmail account?

Also I wasn't talking about the app being installed on the sd card. I was suggesting that you back it up or copy it to the sd card. Then you would install it like a third party app. Perhaps because you are on 2.2 only the phone that moved the application to the sd card will recognize that the app is there.

Market is back and working as well.

thanks again for all your help with this... okay couple more questions

1) how would I know if my gmail account is associated with the old phone? It shows up under email accounts in the phone not sure if that is what you mean though.

2) How do you install a 3rd party app?

Again thanks!

Hmmm... Jason help me out if I have this wrong for Droid 2 menus.

1) go to settings, accounts & sync and if the gmail account is there and sync is turned on.
Maybe the easiest way to check is to have the wifi connected on old phone and send yourself an email to the gmail address. With any luck, the email will be pushed to the phone.

2) go to settings, applications, check on allow third party Apps. Back out of that. Go to whatever file explorer is installed on the old phone. Navigate through the sd card to where the apk file (application) is located. Click/press on the file and the application installer will open. Follow the instructions to install the application.

Let us know if there any more questions.

They changed it just enough to make it confusing Smiley Happy
1. Menu -> Settings -> Accounts. Make sure there is still your google account.
2. Menu -> Settings -> Applications and turn on "Unknown Sources".

My only concern now is that the OP may not have a file explorer installed. Playing with solutions to that right now.

(if all else fails we could always reprogram the old phone, install stuff and reprogram again)

Ok. I think d2 comes with a file browser by default. It's simply called "files" in the app window. (at least I don't remember installing it).

shucks!

okay gmail...Is the gmail account listed in the phone?  Try to force a sync while in airplane mode with the wifi on and connected. Beyond that not sure.  Android 2.2 is just enough different from the 2.1 on my phone.

sms backup...Which app are you using?  There are several out there.  I know the one I use didn't require the gmail address.  It is SMS Backup & Restore by Ritesh Sahu.  I am sure the other ones work well based on a quick scan of their ratings.
