great idea... I went into my new phone - SMS backup app - changed it to save on SD card... then I swapped cards... on the old phone... turned on the 3rd party thing... but when I go to the apps section and click on SD card... nothing shows up...
I went back to my new phone and the SMS backup program is gone... so I would think its on the SD card I swapped...
So where do I find the SMS backup program/install it on the old phone?
Sorry I am so not familiar with this stuff and I do really appreciate your help... I think we are so close

The key here might be in the gmail account as Ann suggested. Can you confirm that the old phone is still associated with your gmail account?

thanks again for all your help with this... okay couple more questions
1) how would I know if my gmail account is associated with the old phone? It shows up under email accounts in the phone not sure if that is what you mean though.
2) How do you install a 3rd party app?
Again thanks!

1) go to settings, accounts & sync and if the gmail account is there and sync is turned on.
Maybe the easiest way to check is to have the wifi connected on old phone and send yourself an email to the gmail address. With any luck, the email will be pushed to the phone.
2) go to settings, applications, check on allow third party Apps. Back out of that. Go to whatever file explorer is installed on the old phone. Navigate through the sd card to where the apk file (application) is located. Click/press on the file and the application installer will open. Follow the instructions to install the application.
Let us know if there any more questions.

1. Menu -> Settings -> Accounts. Make sure there is still your google account.
2. Menu -> Settings -> Applications and turn on "Unknown Sources".
My only concern now is that the OP may not have a file explorer installed. Playing with solutions to that right now.
(if all else fails we could always reprogram the old phone, install stuff and reprogram again)

shucks!
okay gmail...Is the gmail account listed in the phone? Try to force a sync while in airplane mode with the wifi on and connected. Beyond that not sure. Android 2.2 is just enough different from the 2.1 on my phone.
sms backup...Which app are you using? There are several out there. I know the one I use didn't require the gmail address. It is SMS Backup & Restore by Ritesh Sahu. I am sure the other ones work well based on a quick scan of their ratings.
