Mine lights when the keyboard is opened. The lighting is very subtle, almost unnoticable unless it is dark.
I don't know of any way to turn it on or off.

Go to setting and you will have many option ( factory set up was made to save battery) it is light sensor.... on and off automatic to safe battery life.

This is another problem with this phone.  The keyboard and the menu touch buttons will turn off even if set to automatic.   The auto setting wont work in a dark room, so I have to cycle the setting to get it to make it work..  I have checked this in the settings. I set to auto and a few hours later the checkbox is  still  checked but buttons are not illuminated nor do they work in an environment where the lights change brightness. I don't think it is the light sensor that is bad. I do think it has something to do with software.

go to settings>display>brightness. here you will have the option for automatic brightness or you can manually set the light to where you feel comfortable. the keyboard does tend to not light up sometimes on automatic brightness but when it does that simply go back into settings>display>brightness and uncheck and recheck automatic brightness.
