Okay, basically in order for landscape keyboard to work you have to turn the phone on its side. But you have to turn it on its left side. And that's what I was doing wrong. I was turning the phone on its right side. Heaven forbid they code an extra bit to allow for both sides to enable landscape
If you have the landscape keyboard on your Droid, press and hold inside the texting field and you will have the option to choose an input method, and the landscape keyboard option should appear for you. I hope this is helpful!
