just curious to see if anyone tried and downloaded the latest OTA update and see if they notice a difference:

jco23,
Does it keep recontacting you to update this "MANDATORY" update every 30 minutes like it says in Verizon's instructions???
It bothers me that Verizon says it is MANDATORY. I own the phone, NOT Verizon, and I pay for the use of their bandwidth so why do/can they demand that I accept this update.
My phone works perfectly now so why would I want this update. I read the list of what the update does and I am NOT interested in what this update does
JerryF
I was getting that annoying pop up message every so often, so I tried to download and install, but got an error picture (as opposed to a message). could be because my phone is rooted. it failed on both EP4D Tweakstock and EP4P Humble.
so nothing really happens. my only reason for installing this is that it supposedly clears up that "crackling" noise.... I only get that (and a squeaking sound) when playing back a video that I recorded.
other than that, my phone is working perfectly.
The OTA doesnt change anything <post edited per TOS>. I just played with it. nothing changes. not the system version or anything its just a "hey if you think you own your phone, <Keep it clean, thanks!>"

DONT INSTALL IT!
So far I have lost scrolling ability for wallpaper/background and, the puzzle peice lock screen has been replaced with a simple lock swipe .Who knows what else?
How can I get my lost features back????
I got the notification on my phone this morning. I downloaded it and let the phone do its thing while the update installed. I came back to it 30 minutes later, and now I am in a perpetual boot loop. It also appears that the phone is continuously sending my last text message - 6 times as of this writing. I don't know what to do other than a factory reset, but I don't want to lose all my apps and data. I'm contemplating going to the VZW store, but I suspect they will simply do the same factory reset, and from what I've read about other updates, there's no guarantee it will fix the problem. Anyone have any suggestions?
Everybody,
If this new FP1 update has destroyed your phone, BEFORE you do a factory reset, you might try to re-install GB 2.3.6.
I do not know if this will work but take a look here. Then go to page 3 of this thread and go down 8 posts to see the improved version on how to install GingerBread 2.3.6. The good news is that if it will not re-install GB 2.3.6 all that happens is that it will quit.
https://community.verizonwireless.com/message/737788#737788
OTOH, the only damage will be that the battery will burn up, the chip will catch on fire, and your phone will explode...problem solved. JUST KIDDING!
I am surprised by the lack of comments in this thread. Hey folks, if you downloaded and installed the new Charge phone update FP1 please tell us your results.
I just got a call about 10 minutes ago and still getting Static/popping. Makes this update seem useless to me.
Jerry, did you ever install the update? I haven't received it on my phone yet.
Just downloaded the update. As lobstr stated, Scrolling of background is gone. puzzle lock is no longer, the outline of the icons are different. Seems like we are going a step backwards here. If i notice something else, I will let you know.
I don't know, but I want the puzzle piece back too. Much more fun than what is there currently!
I didn't have any problems downloaded the update and the phone is working fine. Don't like some of the cosmetic changes though (no more puzzle unlock), but the icons appear "cleaner" now.
WOWWOWWOW!! Finally the phone I thought I bought almost a year ago!!
Data connectivity is fixed! I live in a fringe area (or so I thought) and have had nothing but problems. Phone had a mind of it's own. Refused to connect. Dropped connection constantly. I legally tether and it was really frustrating.
I'm getting 4G in my home!! And I just watched a half hour of YouTube vids with zero buffering lag! Both impossible before tonight's update.
I can't emphasize enough how ecstatic I am with this update (so far)
Update failed on my charge!
All i got is an error screen and nothing else. Still running on the 2.3.6 and EP4.
Got updated this morning. Other than the puzzle lock gone, everything else seems to be working well. It even seems faster but that may of been because of the reboot. If I see anything strange I will return to tell about it.
Got a notice today that there was a update also, but when I download the update it starts to install and fails to update.
Good old Verizon wireless updates not the first time I have had trouble with updates
Yep. I downloaded it sometime over the w/e.
Immediately: Puzzle piece gone,
Unlock is a lock you swipe,
Can lock drawing a pattern connecting 4 dots, via pin, or password,
When message or call comes in the screen showes a very lightly colored ball that is very difficult to see,
Couldn't answer until I figured out you had to slide/swipe the green button rather than press it to answer,
I leave mine in 3G as I don't like coasting through the day figuring out my proximity to an outlet to recharge and believe it is running slower.
It was suggested at Verizon mothership 1
that I find a darker wallpaper,
wait for "them" to fix it.
It was suggested at Verizon mothership 2
that they'd had a few others complain,
they didn't have any fixes
that it wasn't a downgrade.
I am awaiting great things from "them".
,
I got the notification to push the update last weekend, got tired of repeatedly telling to wait, so I let it install last night while in the dock. Everything appears to have gone ok. Only problems so far is that OpenSignalMaps locked up and crashed; once reinstalled it was ok.
I just tried conference calling (3-way) and I can add the 3rd person ok, but cannot drop the last added call. The only way to drop them is to end the call. The other thing is it deleted my speed dials. I have not tried this yet, but before on the EF4 load I was not able to get speed dial 88 to work at all. Now they are deleted and I have to re-build them. That happened last time they pushed a new load as well.
More on the speed dial.... I had set up a speed dial 8 for forwarding a call from my home phone to the cell and set up 88 to drop it. I never could get 88 to work. 8 worked just fine.
Where do you report this stuff so it could have a chance to get fixed?

Everyone,
Does anyone know how to AVOID INSTALLING the FP1 update without Scooting your phone? From what I have seen here and in two other forums I would prefer NOT to install the FP1 update.
My guess is that, minimally, <Content deleted per the TOS>.
<content deleted per the TOS>
To be completely honest, to get the most out of your charge, don't accept the update. <content deleted per the TOS>. Most phones stock are not great right out of the bag. This one particular. I've had problems from day one when it was stock. Verizon doesn't own the phone, Samsung doesn't own the phone, you do..the user. Don't consult to the norm if you think you are going to have problems from OTA updates. The only update I'm patiently waiting for is ice cream sandwich. Even then, I probably won't accept it OTA.. We aren't left completely out in the dark if Sammy is still trying to keep our phone up to date. Besides, our phone isn't even listed in the ICS update yet. We'll probably see it late Q3 or Q4. Heck, we just got gingerbread at the end of last year.
The Thunderbolt is getting ICS. It practically has the same components of our phone. Just be gracious that Samsung is trying.
<Content deleted per the TOS>
I ended up getting it before reading what it did and have mixed feelings about that . . . but after waiting for the gingerbread update, I was happy to get one quickly and didn't want to lose out on it.
So, I looked at both the original documents about the OTA update. I'm now confused because one document says it allows tethering via Wi-Fi and the other says it is now blocked. I don't have Wi-Fi where I'm at right now so I'll have to confirm but has anyone tried this since the update?
Personally, my connection to 3G has been so awful lately, I'd be happy to lose Wi-Fi tethering to get a fixed data connection (but somewhat annoyed that I have to accept a tradeoff rather than being able to rely on my data connection). Since I use a launcher, I haven't seen any visible changes to the UI for my uses. I'll let you know what my experience has been like in the next day or two. I'm hoping they fixed the battery life cuz mine has been awful for the past few days (though I did accidently fully discharge the battery cuz I was away from a charger too long).
One thing I did note is that when I made a call, I lost my data connection. I'm not entirely sure if it's always done that or if I just noticed that. However, I do like that I don't lose my data connection when I connect to the computer via USB. Whether I'd trade my ability to tether via Wi-Fi for this, I don't know. I imagine that was the decision to be made and Verizon decided for me.
Castbound,
Thanks my friend, I had a strong feeling that my phone would need to be Tooted is do this.
I did the update to my Droid Charge last night without any problem. HOWEVER, I'm very unhappy with one of the changes. I lost my favorite wallpaper, which was the waves lapping up on a beach. Not only can't I find it to reinstall, but it was replaced with a very stupid picture. What I now see is the middle 50% or so of an advertisement for a laptop computer. Because I can't see the entire ad and because I can't interact with it to get more info about the product, I suspect that it was a random picture picked out of who knows where. What I really want is to get my beach wallpaper back. Help!!
I am so upset about this update and so sorry I did it. I have a business account and am SO ANGRY at Verizon for doing this I am pulling my phone and all my employees and moving to ATT. I kept getting the message but i didnt know what the update was for. My phone was working fine. I wasnt going to do it but i did. And I know this will sound dumb to you techies but the thing I liked the best about my phone was the AWESOME live BEACH wallpaper with moving water, starfish and seashells. Wonderfully relaxing and reminded me of home. But this update wiped the THEME feature out of the Display setting menu (where this wallpaper is located) as well as the options for the lock feature (puzzle , etc) and replaced these with UGLY verizon wallpapers and a ugly padlock on the front of my screen. I see NOTHING positive that has occured for my phone in trade for taking my fav feature off. Got the Charge vs other smartphones (which are about all the same for me given what I use it for) due to the larger screen vs Iphone and this wonderful theme. There was nothing wrong with my phone prior to this. It worked fine other than taking random screen captures of itself for no apparent reason every once in a while - and it still does that after this update. I was on the phone with Verizon for 90 minutes ranting and raving while they blamed Samsung who blamed Verizon who finally admitted that maybe it was a Google thing. Good going. They couldnt tell me what the update helped other than to help other users with other issues and they were really sorry it erased some cool features. They didnt think of that and they didnt think to ask me, the consumer, whether I wanted it or not. They didnt even give me fair warning so maybe I couldve got my IT guy to fins a way to save or download the theme somewhere to be reinstalled later. I hate my phone now and I hate the principle that is ok to screw the consumer who is paying you and not even give them an explanation. DONT download this. I have been a big fan of Verizon and talked a lot of people in my industry to switch to them. They have now gotten too rude and too big. First they limit my data, then they screw with my air cards with another update that caused it to interfere with my printer router (never happened before) resulting in my small business spending a bunch of money to reconfigure everything and get a specialized router..and now they do this. And I never even had a choice. I have a choice to go to another company. They will probably screw me too but I will enjoy the honeymoon while it lasts but I wont pay my money to Verizon anymore.
I updated and only noticed that there are now data up/down arrows (official technical term) for wifi connection.
The only problem I have faced so far is that I keep getting Force Close messages on Google Play at startup and can't access the market anymore... not a huge deal since I don't want to buy any apps right now... but will be a problem if it continues.
No one else has this problem??
I got the update this morning as well. No problems. Really the different lock screen doesn't bother me. All it does is unlock your phone. Many users had problems with the puzzle unlock as you would get a call and couldn't unlock to answer or read a text. They probably found an unlock system that worked better and we now have it. Sorry to VTA about losing the beach theme. I actually never run those because they are memory hogs running in the background all the time and slowing your phone down. You should have your phone set to have the screen go dark after no more than 30 seconds for better battery life, so you only see the background such a short time. There probably was a conflict with it and something else with the phone.
Since updating I constantly loose 4G. It shows i'm connected to the network, but it doesn't connect. I have to go in & out of airplane mode to reconnect. I run Go Launcher so most of the other changes don't apply to me. Bottom line is data is screwed up BIG time since update. I downloaded the "restore connectivity settings" app but all I get is APN failed. Thanx for nothing Verizon
Whoever is responsible for this sorry excuse for an "update" really <keep it clean, please> and ought to be fired for this crime against paying customers.
I can get used to the change in the lock screen, although I don't like it, but I'm annoyed by the fact that background scrolling has disappeared. What really annoys me is that certain video formats played from my SD card, namely WMV, no longer work. I get the audio, but the video is replaced by a blank green screen. I tried viewing in three or four different player apps, and I always get the same result. These same videos played fine with no problem the other night before I was chivied into this update. (And please don't tell me to convert the videos to a different format. Video conversion is a time consuming hassle which I don't want to bother with, especially since I never had to bother with it for the WMV format before this update.)
Meanwhile, bugs which came up from the previous Gingerbread update, namely the ringtone bug, have still not been fixed. This is a total disgrace! As someone said earlier in this thread, it's my phone. I'm paying good money for it, and I demand satisfaction! Sure, they may have fixed a few minor issues which I never even noticed, but they've take away functions I've become used to, and all in all this update make this a worse phone than what I bought last summer, not better. I just wonder what other problems I'll be finding with this new update in the days to come.
While you are a legitimate customer, I think you should have spent some time researching about the update before you clicked the install button. Consumers who spend a lot of money on electronics should stem away from the norm and stop following rules.
You say they limited your data? Were you on the unlimited data plan and they didn't grandfather you in? I find that hard to believe.
Leaving Verizon isn't going to do you justice.
It makes me wonder that a lot of people who are complaining about the update might be ignorant to Google's Android OS. Every manufacture who incorporate their own UI with Android has some kind of bug. Even the famed iPhone isn't safe from random reboots, buggy cell reception, and a random force close here or there. No phone is perfect. Neither are the carriers. But I have to believe they do try really hard to make consumers happy about their product. Whether we choose to like it or not...nothing is perfect...stop complaining like the world is going to end and stop thinking "ignorance is bliss" when it comes to smart phones.
Do you really want to opt out and spend 350 bones on each phone to break contract? Even a smart business man wouldn't do that.
<content deleted per the TOS>. my wife's ReZound gets 4G where I couldn't before...now I do...woot!
RomsRfun,
How did you install ONLY the FP1 modem???
Also, what is the "leak RUU" that you mentioned?
Zeam launcher includes scrolling backgrounds & is faster than the stock launcher. Go launcher is pretty & more customizable but much slower. The question is what you want out of the phone. After having my Charge for a year, I'm over wanting a bunch of widgets & apps, live wallpapers, fancy icons & animations. I want speed, & have changed to Zeam, switched from stock browser to Opera Mini, and switched from stock messaging to Pansi (touted as the fastest messaging app). I've cut back to 2 screens, gotten rid of task killer apps, deleted as many other apps as I could deem unnecessary, & have only 4 widgets: ClockQ, Todayist calendar, Silent Toggle Widget & a shortcut to the app I use to connect to my son's school's website. Zeam allows an unlimited number of icons in the dock (and more screens than I am using), & icons in the dock are faster than widgets & use less RAM. Even before I made these changes, my battery has always lasted a full day, and I am in a 4G area most of the day.
Anyway the main thing I wanted to point out is the scrolling background fix. I love the speed of the new unlock screen. My only complaint about the update is that I still have the clicking during phone calls.
And by the way, NoLed is a necessity since there isn't an LED notification light on this phone.
+ Complete calls without experiencing choppy audio, clicking noises and/or
one-way audio noises.
I am still experiencing the clicking and static noises... Which is a major annoyance.
The rest of this versions updates are fine.
Well, I've been playing with it and the only thing I've noticed is that it's more or less ruined my ability to use Wi-Fi AND mobile data at the same time. The connection keeps switching between the two back and forth and nothing loads. I had to turn off mobile data to be able to use my Wi-Fi, which now means I probably need to reinstall Llama in order to handle my connections for me (otherwise, I have to manually switch everything when I want to do stuff). What a huge pain.
I haven't seen any positives just yet so they're probably really small changes. It does seem a bit snappier but that could just have to do with me having reset the phone recently. Really disappointed with this one. I basically traded out Wi-Fi connection for a Wi-Fi arrow picture . . . << Content deleted to comply with Verizon Community ToS >> The more Verizon gets involved with the phone itself, the more worthless it becomes.

VTA,
Hey guy don't do it. First go outside and yell and scream and then punch something SOFT until your arms and hands hurt.
Then, my friend, ask your employees how they feel. It's may be important how they feel than how you feel.
Finally, stay with what you have for a while and see if it can be fixed to meet your company's needs which may be more important than your personal needs.
Most important: Never make a decision when you are extremely upset.
Hope this helps but if you fell like it, just tell me to BUZZ OFF.
Best regards,
Got my OTA update yesterday morning. On the phone when I woke up. Install went smoothly. I like the new lock screen better than the old slide one. Opens with less effort. Greatly improved GPS lock. The phone seems more stable and snappier. I'm using GoLauncher EX and have had no problems with that at all. Bluetooth with MyFord Touch in my new Ford seems to connect more reliably and stay connected, but its only been a day or so. Fingers crossed. Overall, I'd say this was a good update.
Rich
Message was edited by: Rich S Oh, and the delay in playing ring tones for an incoming call is still there, but much less noticeable. Pretty happy overall.
Does it make you wonder that Samsung is getting this phone ready for Ice Cream Sandwhich? I would love to have hardware acceleration!
<Content removed per the TOS>
I have had my share of issues with this phone including returning it once for replacement. However, I would like to know out of the people that are complaining, how many are running rooted and or non-standard configurations. In all fairness to Samsung and Verizon, whether they deserve it or not..., they can't anticipate every option that is out there for these phones and if someone wants to use a non-stock app, e.g. a 3rd party launcher, then that person has to (step up and) take responsibility for the phone's performance. It goes without saying for rooted phones.
Sure, many non-standard apps will work fine, but if someone is looking for an up-time & performance warranty, then they have to accept the product as delivered. Bloatware and all.
I have experience with <Deleted per the TOS> phones; I am currently using a box stock Charge with the FP1 update and it appears to be fine--except possibly for a hint of call interefence (we'll see, ugh). Sure, it may run a little slower than a debloated phone, although I don't think I can tell for normal day-to-day operation. It is fast enough for all the things I do: call, text, email, surf, navigate play some words w/friends. I do agree the tethering problem is an issue--but, if you have to root your phone to do it...
As far as aesthetics, it's just a phone. Don't we all have more important things in our lives?
I've never <deleted per the the TOS> my phone or made any similar changes to the system, nor am I using a third party launcher, although I'm tempted to now after all this, unless these careless and sloppy programmers get on the ball, and fix these issues soon. When I pay good money for something and get locked into a contract to use it, I expect it to work properly.
I installed it, my phone takes longer to boot up (than it already did..before it was 2-3 mins not is is 3-4 mins)
also my camera just doesn't work now....i open the camera and get a black screen and need to restart my phone..
Brunoo1,
Try re-booting your phone at least twice and maybe 3 times. I have seen where some folks have lost their data connection and re-booting several times brought it back from the dead.
Thanks for being sympathetic - I appreciate it really. It may have been memory hog but i was able to use my phone all day without eating up the battery with it running and the screen power save set to 1 minute instead of 30 seconds. I just use my phone to talk on and check my email and reluctantly answer texts (which I hate). I dont play music or anything else on it. Boy I loved that theme!!
You are so cute!! VTA is a gal - not a guy - that is why I am so emotional about it! LOL. It is the principle that upsets me the most. I hate that they blame each other and dont ask me the customer what I think or let me know what to expect. My employees hate the padlock!! My hubby - who I convinced to get one - an AT&T employee for 37 years with an IPhone with the AT&T company discount - switched to Verizon cuz of me...and he is pissed even though he doesnt care about the themes. He is a redneck like me and mad they did something that took off features without fair warning. I have several conversations with Verizon. Spent all night last night trying to find a suitable beach wallpaper that worked with F1 to no avail. I have already given two new Boost mobiles and they are working fine (we dont use our phones expect to talk really) and two Virgin Mobile Air Cards. Cheaper than Verizon, not contracts and they have been working great even on road projects (that is what we do - inspect as well as public info on road and bridge projects for Florida) in the middle of nowhere. I am surprised. I will shift all my employees to these and I will get an AT&T IPhone. If I have to lose my Beach wall paper...then I will give my money to another company who lets me know up front I dont get it. LOL. I found the Beach wall paper online and downloaded it ..but it does not load on this new system update. BTW that update was NOT a Samsung update as Verizon reps asserted to me.
Hi - I have to comment. I will go from phone company to phone company until I find one that cares about the customer. Or I guess I should say one that pretends the best to care. I am not tech savvy enough to know that there was info on the update and what it would do and not do. The install screen came up 15 minutes before I had to do a workshop for a client so I didnt have time to sit down and "research" it and I trusted my cell phone company. Sorry I am so stupid compared to you. I dont mind the little bugs and reading the comments on this blog.. I dont use my phone for any of the stuff they are talking about. I am in Florida and we get great reception, fast service, texts ok and I can check my email. Once in a while it gets stuck and you have to reboot but for the most part it is fine....and that was BEFORE the update. I dont do WIFI on my phone or tethering (I dont even know what that is)...I dont synch it or connect it to my computer. So us regular plain old consumers - business or personal - got the shaft. And I would rather not give me money to a company like that. Simple as that. I have no other way to control this or have a say other than who I give my money to. Hope you can understand that. God bless.
Updated and lost the ability to change the unlock screen. The puzzle unlock screen is gone, and the option to change it is also gone.
That alone really irritates me. The Verizon reps were totally unaware of this new update and were baffled that I couldn't switch my unlock screen - they asked if I had rooted my phone, which I never have. They are sending me out a new phone thinking that my current phone has something wrong with it. Until I read this forum I wasn't even aware that option had been removed. That's just really weird they would take the stock unlock screen off the phone. I really don't understand that move.
Has anyone figured out how to switch it back to the puzzle piece unlock screen??
Just a phone to you but it is my business for me. You are missing the point. It is the principle. I bought a phone (lots of them for me and my employees) and I got mine based on what it looked like and features - less than a year ago. Whether that is important to you or not... as much as I use my phone to stay in contact with clients and family as I travel alone across Florida..it is important to me. I could not do my job without it and I have a high stress job..features are important. I dont know what the heck root or whatever you said is. All the features I used and cared about came on the phone when I bought it and turned in my other one in. I didnt add or download anything except my email account. It is a lot of money to me and not JUST A PHONE. I cant stand to look at it now. Reminds me I am paying money ... alot of money...to a vendor who does whatever they want and gives me whatever they feel like giving me ...without my input, consent or even letting me know. I would be out of business in a month if I treated my clients like that.
P.S. I was on the unlimited data plan for years with my air cards and phones. However - when they went to 4G and I updated to phones or air cards that accepted 4G (here in Florida) they told me that my "grandfathering" no long er applied and I had to choose either 5GB or 10GB. We use air cards exclusively as our internet connections in my business as we are often traveling and out on road projects. We use a lot as we send and receive data and plans and pics to FDOT and other clients through the internet. You seem to think you know a lot and I am glad this all works great for you ---but it doesnt for us. I am sorry everyone was having all these other bugs I hear talked about in these comments such as clicking noises and other issues. I have asked several other firms and clients today who use various Droid Verizon phones and none of them report those issues here in Florida and myself nor my employees have them. Phone used to work fine and there is no benefit or difference that we can see at this time with the update.
The FP1 Update has been great for my wife and I, I updated both of our phones early Friday morning on both of them. Each update finished in about 15 minutes and our phones have been running perfectly since the updates. Boot up times are so much faster now, the browser is snappier too! No FC's...just buttery smooth!
Possibly...the lockscreen is ICS-like, and some of the icons like the phone icon now looks just like the phone icon for ICS w/ TouchWiz. I mean, they didn't have to change the lockscreen....why make it ICS-like?? To tease us? I think there is still a 30% chance or so that the Charge could get ICS. For some reason, there is never much news about this phone or the updates for it. Verizon nor Samsung use social sites to tweet anything about it, where as other phone makers and carriers will hint at their phones software updates. For instance, Gingerbread for the Charge was never really announced prior anywhere from Verizon or Samsung, we just saw numerous leaks and then Verizon finalllyyyy posted the changelog for GB EP4D. This new FP1 update kinda came out without the leaks. I think ICS could still come out at years end for the Charge, maybe December after Jelly Bean 5.0 has rolled out :smileyhappy:
I love the new update. data seems much more consistent (3g), things seem faster, and no bad side effects so far.
x00mdaddy, no, there is no way to get puzzle lock back, have you not been following the thread? you can still choose from none, pattern, pin, or password, though.
to others, I had a fascinate I rooted, but I really didn't see much difference in de bloating it. I also discovered I really love touchwiz compared to alternatives, and the samsung apps have a lot of features other apps don't. I really didn't think it was worth it
This thread is beginning to look like a document released by the CIA under the Freedom of Information Act. Is all this censorship really necessary? Some people "do it" to their phones, others don't "do it". I never have, but I still don't see the need to be so heavy-handed about the mere mentioning of "it".
That said, I'm on day 3 after the update. Fully satisfied with my Charge again. Running faster, better GPS locking and better bluetooth behavior in the car. I'm not sure all this is due the update, but I'm not asking any questions. Again, I prefer the new lock screen to the old slide or puzzle. The phone is much easier to unlock and to answer incoming calls. JMO.
