Latest update messed up my phone!!

Updated this morning now my wallpaper is all messed up, it's split up on different screens, and when I scroll through my screen all my wiggets overlap each other and the screen looks like it's fried, when I look at pictures on facebook they aren't fit to the screen, whoever badge made this update must not be aware that the droid has a rectangular screen and not square, and I can't go back and undo it. Tried factory reset and that didn't help, now I'm getting a new one, hopefully this update isn't on it! Is anyone else having this problem are just me?!? Anyone have a solution incase my new phone has this stupid update on it as well?

You won't have a choice to decline the update. Others have said you will keep receiving popup notices. Your "new" phone will no doubt have it installed already and, no, you can't undo it.

The "new" phone you will be receiving is a "like-new refurbished" (that means used) phone. That will be another thread from you at a later time.........

As for the issues you had. I would have deleted the trouble widgets and re-installed them. The same with your wallpaper. If I remember, the update defaulted back to the stock wallpaper. That is probably what you were seeing. It IS low tech looking for such a high tech phone.

I also use a folder app and had to sort with issues with those after GB. After emailing the developer, he suggested a work-around that worked.

As for the Facebook photo viewing issue. Sounds like you are talking about the mobile site. Photo orientation is strange, not the update's fault. Try the Facebook app. Photos viewed with the facebook app are orientated to your screen much better.

All the providers send out refurbished phones as replacements. If you had insurance, that is there policy.

I understand you do not want to receive a CLNR (Certified Like New Replacement) however, if you need to get a replacement for a device that you have had more than 14 days, we will replace it for the manufacturer with a CLNR. In this case, it is Motorola.

As the other poster said, your replacement will have GB on it as well. They're also correct about the wallpaper resetting to the default Droid X wallpaper when updating, I believe. I think it also defaults it back to "Scroll" - which I hate (I think this is what you mean by the wallpaper splitting up on different screens?)

As for your screens lagging, and wallpaper splitting, that sounds like a widget. If you have any on, take them off. All they do is lag.

I'm so upset the new OS pushed to my phone while I was sleeping.  The reason I have this phone is because the Froyo update screwed up my Fascinate which I loved.  Now I have no choice I guess but either to put off installing it every hour or installing it.  There should be a choice IMO.  I wanted to wait and see what the bugs were for a good few months before I installed. Crap!  I'm **bleep**! AGAIN.  I've only had the phone a **bleep** week.  Now I have to reset and reconfigure everything AGAIN?

Woah woah woah, you don't even HAVE the update, you don't know if there are going to be issues with yours. Calm down! There are tons of people who don't have the issues when they update to GB. I didn't, and I never did a factory reset.

Don't let all the negative posts on here scare you away from it. If anything, learn from them and be prepared to turn off settings such as vibrate/sound on keypress in your keyboard, any widgets you may have, screen animations, etc. As those seem to be what trigger some problems with GB.

Using profanity isn't really going to accomplish anything except negative responses.....  The update has been blamed for a number of unrelated situations in my opinion, I sure hope you did not get this worked up when you updated your desktop from XP to Vista, when you install a updated OS the incompatibility part of the game is a known common item and getting upset does not really change that outcome.

I have received the update on both of my Droid X's and hasn't experience any issues with the devices, out of curiosity when you hard reset did you make sure to disable the auto restore option that will auto restore apps and settings after a reset because this has caused issues for some?

Main problem I have is every time I turn wifi on, after turning it off I lose the 3G data.  Shows 3G just fine with 4 bars, but no internet connection ability.  Have reset the phone twice.  The only way to get around it reliably is to turn the phone off and then back on.  Occassionally I can just turn airplane mode on and then off after a few seconds and it will work - but not every time.  I've seen enough problems crop up on three Droid X's that we have that were not there before the update came out.  I thought Verizon "checked" these things before they put it out... it sure takes them long enough to get an update out after the SDK for the OS has been released you would think the majority of the apparent bugs would be squashed.

I understand you issues and I can agree that this can be frustrating at times but the one thing you seem to not take in consideration, there is thousands of 3td party apps floating around that can not be tested for compatibilities because Android is a open source platform which means developers are not locked into a single method of adding new features onto the device.. Have you tried clearing the system cache on device or entering Safe Mode?

Safe Mode:

  • Power off phone
  • Press and HOLD the Menu button
  • Power up phone - continue to HOLD Menu button

Takes about 1-2 mins, but will eventually come up and say SAFE MODE or TURN ON WIFI in lower left corner.  Test for a while. But avoid starting APPS you don't really need.  If the problem is gone, you likely have a rogue APP or Widget causing your issue.

To get out of SAFE MODE, just power off/on as usual.

Clear Cache:

  • Turn off your phone.
  • Hold the home button
  • Keep holding Home, and hold power until the Moto logo comes on. You can

release power, but keep holding home until you see exclamation point with the Android.

  • Press Volume up and down together to enter menu screen
  • Use Volume buttons to navigate to Clear Cache
  • Press Power button to select an option and allow process to complete.
  • Select Restart and Press Power button to select.

The OS updates are usually tested on a clean stock version of Android that hasn't had a number of app create custom configuration files, I really wish Android would add a new command to the process to wipe device before updating because I really feel that this will cut our a large amount of confusion and issues.

Now lets make it clear I am not dismissing your problem and saying the update doesn't have its issues but until you exclude any possible items or apps it makes it a little hard to isolate a solution sometimes

I appreciate all of the posts on this thread including both the naive (which might include me) and the

helpful hints.

Here's where I stand. I downloaded the system update today. I do not have many purchased/free 3rd party apps at all

however I would note that the one app that I upgraded today was Lookout to Lookout Premium. I would have hoped that

that would not be a source of problems.

After update a) both my contacts and dialer icons say "application not installed," b) arrow at the bottom of the screen that would allow me to get to apps is missing on all screens, c) the very bottom of the screen is covered with what I guess are called widgets. They are only about half on the screen and half disappear below. This no doubt accounts for the missing arrow for apps as well as a missing garbage can in case I want to dispose of an icon.

After reading many of the posts I thought the Safe Mode and Clear Cache notes in this posting were a very reasonable way to start. I went into the Safe Mode instructions below. Powered down; tried to power up holding Menu and . . .

I now have an exclamation point inside of a triangle (for the last hour). I cannot power down nor can I power up.

So before trying this I was actually stuck without being able to make a phone call. That now looks like the least of it.

Now ...disaster.

Ideas about how to get out of this? Is there a chip that I should be taking out and reinstalling? Hopefully without losing everything -- are there options?

Thank you.

The far right icon on the bottom should be a weird looking arrow in a box - that's how you open the app drawer., c) the very bottom of the screen is covered with what I guess are called widgets. They are only about half on the screen and half disappear below. This no doubt accounts for the missing arrow for apps as well as a missing garbage can in case I want to dispose of an icon. If you long press an app icon, a garbage can pops up on the top of the screen now to dispose of them. The "widgets" you're talking about on the bottom are apps and the first 3 can be changed to whatever you want (I put the 3 I use most - I found it handy) but the 4th one is always the app drawer icon.

Hope that clears things up a bit. It's all just the new look of GB

@smpoulos  -  Are you still unable to Power the phone back up?

If you got an "exclamation point" during the attempt at SAFE MODE, it sounds like you weren't pressing/holding down the MENU button, but maybe the Home button ??? If it is "stuck" powering back up, try to take the Battery out for a min. or so, and put back in & power up again.

Give a holler if you're still having problems.

Cody, thank you very much.

In fact what I did when I went to sleep last night was to plug the phone in as one would for

recharging. When I got up this AM it was powered off and I could start up.

And I'm embarrassed to say that I may indeed have pressed the Home button rather than the

Menu button. Does still seem strange that the phone would totally lock up and not even allow powering down.

You will see a response to another helpful person's aid in response to another part of my problems

(still not fixed) in a separate response.

I really appreciate this forum (as difficult as it is to find it on Verizon's site!!).

You all have been great. Still look forward to a response to my previous response re weird stuff at the bottom of

the screen.

Most welcome - we're all here to help.

So are you saying that the phone now powers up and down properly?

As far as the Icons & other "Changes" you're seeing, those were all a result of the ne GingerBread release. It changed a bunch of things cosmetically regarding screens, icons, app placement, etc. The APP Drawer is now the far right icon. As you have seen, the Trash can is now up at the top. Frankly, many of us really don't enjoy the "blur" experieince and have gone as far as installing 3rd party Apps that are much much better - things like more customization & control & more screens, etc.  Personally, I use Launcher Pro Plus (although there is a small bug introduced with GB that has been reported to the developer). Others have had good experieince with ADW or GO Launcher .. probably other APPS out there as well. They all offer a Free version for you to try out.  It's all just going to be a learning experience for you to get used to either the new Blur, or learning another APP. If you decide to stick with the default BLUR, feel free to ask questions if you're confused about anything

Good luck.

Thx. I'm taking you up on asking more.

I have looked at and considered many apps but I've tried because of the malware etc.

issues to download very very little. I think I read reviews in about 10 places before I dare to

do anything.

So the remaining issue with GB as it stands is what I wrote about in response to another response.

... the things at the bottom may be apps but they don't act like apps--so I can't hold them

down and get a garbage can. If I hold them down I get a screen called "Add to Dock" with every single

app in the system listed. That applies even to the one that looks like "Contacts" ; another is the

"Messages" icon; the third icon is for an app that I downloaded myself "Arrows Keyboard."

This is in ref to 3 icons semi-falling off the bottom of the screen in line with the new Apps link as the 4th

(and properly working) item.

These icons exist also where they should on various screens as links to apps but what I'm talking about

here are (visual) dups that are not links. They are garbage and I have found no way to delete them since

when depressed they give that "add to dock" message with a list of all apps in the system.

Sound familiar? Any ideas? I've been through settings/apps looking to delete or stop or  . . . .

They won't interfere with phone use as far as I can see but why are they there? who needs them? and

most annoyingly why can't I get rid of them?!!

Advice appreciated.

Oh, and yes phone powers up and down.

Ah, I see what you mean ... Well, yea, GB changed all that. The 3 Icons on the MAIN dock (from the Left) are ONLY changeable -- you can long-press any of those & change to a different APP as you wish. The App Drawer (far right one) you CANNOT change. So you can't drag & drop any of those left 3 to the trash can - only modify which AP you wish.  Also, there is a new feature in GB for creating "groups" of APPS in a folder. Personally I have not gotten familiar with that feature as I don't use BLUR as I mentioned before. If you become to not like the BLUR experience, I would definietly check out Launcher Plus (free version) or Launcer Plus Pro (paid), or ADW (which I'm not familiar with).

PS, not sure if this is of any help but there was in fact an update user guide for GB ... Maybe this will contain help for you.

GB User Guide

Good luck.

edit: Sorry - that link no longer works ... I'll look around for another oneand post it later.

Ok, I see what you mean. Delete 3 apps from elsewhere and live with having them

at the bottom of each page. Right. Will do.

Thanks again. [And why didn't I think of that? except that I thought "add to dock" might

literally "add" and not "substitute/change"].
