Lost my location

I arrived at my current location (Elephant Butte, NM, in the south-central part of NM) on 9/1. All my location-based services were fine, they showed me weather, etc. at the nearest larger town, Truth or Consequences NM. About 2-3 weeks ago, my phone suddenly started showing me in Santa Fe, NM, which is 200 miles north and certainly NOT the nearest large city - Las Cruces to the south and Albuquerque to the north are both closer than SF, though still not near where I am. A friend's Android phone, another VZW customer though not a Motorola phone, did the same thing at the same time. We are both still showing ourselves in Santa Fe and not anywhere near where we are. If I turn on the GPS and go outside so it can see a satellite, of course it shows me where I actually am. But when I just have Google Location services or Verizon location services checked in settings, back to Santa Fe. I called a VZW tech and did everything he recommended. Took the battery out, reset some location and data settings, etc. I asked whether there could be a problem with a nearby VZW tower, he said no, though it seems to me that I'm not getting as strong a signal as I used to here. He said maybe Google was having a problem. I figured I'd wait and it would be fixed, whatever it was, but not so far! Any ideas?

Did you try dialing *228 and option #2 to update your PRL?

I was pretty sure that was about the first thing I tried, but I did it again just for grins and then rebooted. No change, but thank you!

(Updating PRL, that is)

Do you have a wireless router that moved with you from your old location tot he new location?

If so, that is the problem. When Google went out and did their car/bike/walking picture taking, they also recorded wireless router network names and the GPS location of the network. By moving your wireless network and not changing the name, it see's the network name, and corrolates it to the Sante Fe location that is in the database.

Chaning the network name should help resolve the situation. Also, do not rely on Google location services by itself, use the Verizon location services too. That way, the tower locations should resolve to where you are at correctly

Our wireless router is via Virgin Mobile, and the network address can't be changed, and I don't have WiFi on the phone turned on anyway except when I want to sync some info between phone and computer.  Google maps wouldn't allow me to uninstall it completely via Market (is there another way to uninstall it?)  When I just have Verizon Location Services checked, none of the location based services seem to work, they all want either Google or GPS checked.  They don't show me at any location, just with Verizon checked.  Using Google location services seems to be what gives me Santa Fe.

note the name "google" in google maps.

they want gps if you're navigating.

i use google, it gets me close enough to my location & is still accurate if you type in an address.
