Love my Droid X but sick of the rebooting since I received it 2 days ago.

It is fresh out of the box and if will continuously reboot and sometimes will just turn off with the only way to get it back on is to remove the battery. I did find that as long as I leave the display on this does not happen at all. If the battery lasted longer and calls weren't dropped every 30 seconds because of this issue I'd just get the extended life battery (which should be included with all these phones). I've done all of the recommended actions such as resetting to factory defaults, removing all apps, and updating the phone. My only option appears to be request a new one and hope that one works!? What kind of **bleep** is that? I am so frustrated since I have had Verizon for over 10 years without any problems until now.

OK I see that it appears you have went through a number of methods of troubleshooting but I am wondering one thing, when you hard reset did you disable the autorestore option to avoid bad settings to be automatically restored to the device...  The issue you have discribed sounds like a possible stray app but on another level the device could be the issue also but I would bet its a app...

Try:

Follow these settings during restore to avoid issues being restored automatically.

1. Uncheck "Back up my data" under Settings/Privacy

2. Click Factory Data Reset/Reset Phone

3. After reset is complete only Active Phone but do not input Google Email information

4. Once phone is at homepage go back into Settings/Privacy and make sure the Automatic Restore option is unchecked, even if grayed out, activate "Back up my data" and quickly disable "Automatic Restore"

5. After being sure that the Automatic Restore option is off it will be safe to log into Google and you can continue installing preferred apps and custom settings.

This process will stop all applications and settings from restoring automatically and restoring original issues that usually resolve a number of issues.

"fresh out of the box", "removing all apps", sounds contradictory.

how many apps did you install before you started having problems.

otoh, mine, out of the box back in dec, has worked without a hiccup.

Bu the one thing that usually cant be considered is that not all users use the same apps and it only take one to cause everything to go crazy.

true and many folks probably don't tell what really happened anyway.

it can't be both, out of the box/removing all apps, doesn't sound like just one app.

Ok, I understand the need to do a factory reset to restore the phone to ground zero to eliminate every other possibility other then the phone and base OS... BUT I do have some questions concerning this:

1) Is there software that can back up the apps and settings so that after I did this factory reset (on my fiancé's phone which in on my account) that would allow me to back up 100% of the apps and data of what we have installed on the phone to the SD card?  I would want to be able to reset the phone to vanilla... then use it for a few days and see if it stabilizes... and if it does, then install the apps 1 or a few at a time to see what is causing the problem.

2) If I do the above and while it's in vanilla mode it STILL freezes and reboots multiple times a day, is that a situation where  Verizon will typically replace the phone?  (We've had it literally reboot 3 times within 5 minutes while we were trying to talk to relatives... Although that is more than normal, 'normal' is locking and/or rebooting 3-10+ times a day - frustrating at best).

3) If Verizon does replace the phone, I gather I could hold onto my SD card if I can make a backup of her apps and data?

I ask this because I've done some researching and I know there is software that will 100% backup and restore every app and data that I'm running - but it has to be on a rooted phone... Obviously, that's not what I'm wanting to do.  I have the capability mind you (I do IT Support for a living), I just don't want to void the warranty on a phone that may need to be replaced.

I appreciate your thoughts on this...

Thanks!

Matt

PS. We've had the phone about 45 days, got it refurbished via phone upgrade and do have the insurance if that matters.

I am having the exact same problem with my Droid X.  Got it on Thursday, and it has powering down and restarting itself several times a day.  I did download three apps over that time.  Did the Factory Reset the way mentioned above, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.  VZ customer service just told me to take the battery out and then put it back in (which of course didn't work, being as that was the first simple fix I could think of).  Sometimes, in addition to it turning off, it will come back on and be completely frozen.  Also, after sitting for awhile with no use (maybe 2 hours), it is completely frozen.  It is always frozen in the morning unless it is on the charger.  Really hope it will help taking the Automatic Restore offline after the Factory Reset will fix the problem.  If not, VZ store will be seeing me tomorrow, as I won't be calling Customer Service again.

Care to share the 3 apps?  By chance is one Launcher Pro?

As indicated by Wildman (thank you!) the rebooting issue may be due to a third party application and following his instructions this issue may be resolved. In the event that this rebooting issue continues, please keep in mind that your phone includes a one year manufacturer's warranty and you device can be replaced if needed. Please see details at link below:
