Main Email account deletion?

My wife picked up our new droids yesterday and when she did they had to put in an email address from gmail. Per verizon rep. I do not want that email account. In fact I already deleted it from Gmail.

Now when I try to delete the account from my Droid, it says I have to set it back to the factory defaults. Which I assume will erase all my contacts, apps, and everything else.

Any one have a way of deleting it without setting it back to factory default?

Thanks,

From what I heard when I got my phone at the store yesterday... being a phone using Google's Android OS, you have to have a gmail account to activate it. If you didn't have one, they'd help you create one there at the store.

You don't necessarily have to use that email account for anything, and if you set up any additional email accounts (gmail or another type of email) on your phone, you can set one of those to be the phone's 'default' email address (as far as email related apps would go i suppose).

If you've already closed your gmail email via another computer, I would suggest you attempt to re-enable it to avoid any loss of data since it seems your phone truly requires that gmail account to function.

I would have to totally agree with SketchX51! You have to create a gmail account when you first activate it. When first powering up the device, it asks you to create your gmail account, motoblur, and any other social network account that you want to add. You don't necessarily have to use that particular email address UNLESS you want to use any of the apps made by Google (i.e., Google Talk, Maps, Latitude, etc.). Otherwise, its not mandatory to use, but mandatory to create. Does this make sense? I hope it helped:smileywink:
