Maps application locking up phone..

This just happened. It's happened before in the past. When I open the maps application, it will completely lock up the phone and I have to do a battery pull. Has anyone else had this issue? Any fixes? Thanks..

I have waited as long as 5 minutes for a response, and the screen wouldn't even dim. I'm thinking it's less of a memory allocation issue than a bug in either the data cache or with the layer feature. I tried running maps with the Traffic and Latitude layers off and it ran better. But then, no Traffic or Latitude...

That could be possible because I do not use the layers option on my device..  If it is a cache issue the OP could try clearing Settings / Applications / Manage Applixarions / All Tab / Maps / Clear Cache..

Yes, for me several times.

My solution:

Go to settings / applications / manage applications. Select the tab that shows All Apps. Find Maps and select it. Choose clear cache and clear all data.

Next time you run Google Maps, you'll have to select your layers and labs settings, but it shouldn't crash. It may not prevent future lockups, but it'll get you going.

Anybody know the root cause? Any permanent fixes?

Can't really say for sure because so far I haven't had it happen yo me but if I guessed on the nature of issue it sounds like the device may have been low on resources possibly. The map app requires a good amount of memory to run and if the systems memory was already low and system couldn't free enough for app to run I could see it cause device to freeze... Have you ever tried to wait a little bit and see if device starts responding again after system frees up memory?

Yea, this last time, I waited 20 minutes with a frozen screen. I was seeing if memory would free up, or the app would force close, or the phone would just reboot, but nothing. I finally gave up and did a battery pull...
